WHEREAS, the Congress and the President of the United States
have established bg law a national holiday an January
15, the birthday of Dr. martin Cuther King, Jr., and
WHEREAS, Dr. King dedicated his life to the American proposition
that we as a people have and can continue the achievement
of nen-violent social change, and
WHEREAS, Dr. King admonished us that it is far better to "love
than hate" and to seek justice rather than revenge and to
refrain from acts of violence or profess hatred far any
people, group or race, and
MEMO, in addition to honoring the memory of Dr. King and keeping
alive the cause of the attainment of social changes for
all people, this occasion serves to honor the contribution--
of
ontributionsof black citizens of Ar,,:%rica and reminds us that racial
equality must alwags he a carnerstone of nor demncracg,
NOW, UEREFORE, I, Jahn McDonald, Magar of the City of Inva City,
Iowa, an hereby proclaim the week of January 13 - 19,
1985, as DR. MAR¢IN CHVIER KING, JR., BEEK in Iowa Ciby
and encourage appropriate activities within nor ciby to
mark the anniversary of Dr. King's 55bh hirthdag.
