OII-l'aM- i`hG cr..e..J.Le Aila P F R NJ City of Iowa City MEMORANDUM DATE: October'l, 1986 TO: Steve Atkins and City Council FROM: Chuck Schmadeke and Cathy EiAenhofer RE: City Property at 228 West Benton Street •The City purchased the property at 228 West Benton Street in June of 1986 in order to replace the box culvert and improve channel flow characteristics along a creek which flows through the property: The creek crosses Benton Street west of Orchard Street. The culvert work is scheduled for the summer of 1987. The house has been inspected for compliance with City Codes. It is estimated that between $3,000.00 and $4,000.00 .in repairs are necessary to bring the property into compliance. . This 'cost along with property taxes ($800.00/year) and the possibility of additional maintenance expenses, renders the property unprofitable as a rental unit. ' The previous owner received $400.00 Per month in rent. Public Works and Finance recommend that the house be sold and moved from the site. The City's involvement would only be with the sale of the house. Once the .house is sold, the new owner would be responsible for finding a suitable lot and complying with City Codes and Ordinances regarding house moves. The other option is to demolish the house. This could be accomplished for approximately $2,500.00. Unless directed otherwise by Council, the Finance Department will proceed with the sale. I
