participation In the Iowa City Hospice Road Races held Sunday, October 19,
1986.
RACE FACTS
1,577 individuals registered for the event, 1,427 safely finished with the
first person, 22 year old Chris Walsh of Iowa City clocking a time of 5 minutes
and 08 seconds in the 1 Mile race and 38 year old Thomas Thatcher of Iowa City
In a time of 2 hours and 05 minutes In the half marathon (13.1 miles). There
were 1,458 Iowans and 199 out of state participants, including individuals
from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Washington. 851 Iowa City and
Coralville residents ran or walked in this event. There were 450 community
volunteers that contributed their time In order to Insure that the participants
enjoyed themselves and arrived safely at the finish line. To date $51,380 has
been raised by pledges contributed to Hospice, our lead agency and the agencies
of United Way. This represents a 27% Increase over last year. Our top pledge
and half marathon participant was Marvin Thostenson raising $1,213 for Hospice.
Our first place team competition was The Iowa City Pessimists (having
challenged the Sunrise Optimists for the second time . This Is a sore spot
with Optimist and Sgt. Bill Cook better known lately as Iowa City's most
graceful walker. His disappointment In the Optimists was brightened by his
overall win in the 5K walk with a time of 33:53.16. Our youngest participant
was Iowa Cltian Joe Brady, 3 years old, running the 1 mile fun run along with
parents Pat and Margo and brother Danny who were awarded "most family members
to participate". Our oldest participant was 77 year old Mary Werth from Iowa

City. Our national guests included former University of Iowa cross country
and track athlete Nan Doak Davis, currently residing in Brunswick Maine,
training with Joan Benoit Samuelson, and Jeff Galloway of Atlanta, Georgia.
Now my favorite report: There were no Injuries. Traffic control director Pat
Hurley assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Sgt. Fort, Officers
Schultz, Huff and Immermann, the Sheriff's department, the department reserves
and law enforcement explorers once again provided excellent service to the
participants. There were no complaints received by the police department.
On behalf of the Iowa City Road Races, Hospice and Agencies of United Way, I
would like to thank Mayor, celebrity walker and participant Bill Ambrisco,
celebrity walker Kate Dickson, the city council, Steven Atkins, Dale Helling
and City staff, and the Police Department for your Involvement in the IOth
Annual Iowa City Hospice Road Races.
