IOWA 52240 (319)356-500D I i i t P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, communicative disorders, including hearing loss, speech impairments and related language deficiencies, constitute our nations number one handicap, affecting 5,100 people in Iowa City alone and 22 million people nationally, and WHEREAS, most people with such problems can be helped through medical treatment, surgery, hearing aids or appro- priate therapy, and WHEREAS, the first step toward obtaining help is knowing that it is available, and WHEREAS, the leading national and regional organizations con- cerned with hearing, speech, and language problems have joined together in a common desire to promote public awareness through an intensive annual effort, and WHEREAS, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club is actively engaged in programs to assist those with communication disorders, and WHEREAS, such an effort will help encourage and stimulate early detection of communicative disorders, proper prevention, and treatment, and greater public under- standing of hearing, speech and language impairments, NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May as BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH. I urge all citizens of Iowa City to learn more about hearing, speech, and language disorders and to join in the effort to create a more enlightened public attitude and response to this, our nation's most widespread malady. IOWA CITY, IOWA 52240 (319) 356-50170 i P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of Iowa has proclaimed the week of May 12 - 18, 1985, as Senior Center Week, and WHEREAS, the month of May has been proclaimed as Older Iowans Month, and communities across Iowa have been encour- aged to give special recognition to older persons, and the role of senior centers in serving them, and WHEREAS, senior centers in Iowa affirm the dignity, self- worth and independence of older persons by facili- tating their decisions and actions; tapping their experiences, skills and knowledge, and enabling their continued contribution to the community, and WHEREAS, senior centers function as service delivery focal points, helping older persons to help themselves and each other in offering services or access to community services as needed, and WHEREAS, the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center serves as a visible commitment to our older citizens, and WHEREAS, organizations such as the Council of Elders are planning events to make this a memorable occasion for older citizens in Iowa City, NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of May 12 - 18, 1985, as SENIOR CENTER WEEK in Iowa City and ask residents to join in this time of recognition of older citizens. IOWA CITY, IOWA 52240 (319) 356.5000 i P R O C L A M A T I O N i 1 WHEREAS, the vocational rehabilitation of disabled and handicapped people is a mission worthy of the support of all citizens, and WHEREAS, such rehabilitation requires comprehensive pro- grams and services such as vocational assessment, counseling, guidance, job training and placement, conducted by professional staff, and WHEREAS, the need for vocational rehabilitation services continues to grow, and such services will have to come from local communities, and WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa is cele- brating 20 years of success in providing these essential services to disabled individuals in our community, and WHEREAS, May 5 - 11, 1985, has been set aside as Goodwill Industries Week to recognize the contributions of Goodwill Industries to improve the quality of life for disabled citizens throughout the country, NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim May 5 - 11, 1985, as GOODWILL INDUSTRIES WEEK in Iowa City, and I urge all citizens to give their continued support and recognition to the efforts of this valuable organization. IOWA CITY, IOWA 52240 (319)356-500D P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, Mercy Hospital in Iowa City is celebrating the com- pletion of its 1982 building and renovation project with a week of special events, and WHEREAS, the week of May 12 to 18 is National Hospital Week and Mercy Hospital serves as the Iowa City community health care provider and as a regional acute care hospital, and WHEREAS, the theme of Mercy's special celebration is "Dedication to the Future" and the public is invited to an open house at the hospital on Sunday, May 19, from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., and WHEREAS, Veterans Administration Medical Center and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics provide tertiary care and highly specialized patient care services, and WHEREAS, the combined efforts of our three hospitals make Iowa City a medical center of the highest quality which draws patients from a multi -state region, and WHEREAS, Iowa Citians are proud of our reputation as a health care center and a mecca for health care professionals, and WHEREAS, we all join in paying tribute to our fellow citizens in the health care profession and salute their dedication to skilled and compassionate medical care, NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, hereby proclaim the week of May 12 - 18, 1985, as IOWA CITY HOSPITAL WEEK, and urge all citizens to give special recognition to our local hospitals and their staffs for commitment to health care as their "Lifework", which is the national theme of hospital week.
