HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-01-15 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the future of Iowa City rests on the hopes and dreams of its children youth; and Whereas, mentors offer a valuable encouragement, motivation and hope for our youth by providing a consistent role model; and Whereas, too many youth will face struggles with alcohol and other drugs, teen pregnancy, and education failure; and Whereas, research has shown mentored youth are 52% less likely to skip school, 46% less likely to start using drugs, and 27% less likely to start drinking; and Whereas, relationships with caring mentors offer youth valuable encouragement, motivation, and support to guide them toward making positive choices; and Whereas, mentoring school-based programs, mentor coalitions, as well as public and private organizations throughout Iowa City are committed to increasing the number of quality mentors in our community; and Whereas, partnerships between businesses, education and mentor programs are an effective way for businesses to support youth within the community; and Whereas, mentoring before, during, and after school has become an effective strategy used by schools to increase student attendance and academic performance; and Whereas, hundreds of Iowa City youth are waiting for mentors; and Whereas, Iowa City Mentoring Month provides an opportunity to recognize and commend the efforts of these programs and raise community awareness of the importance of mentoring. NOWT therefore, I, Regenia Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa; Big Brothers Big Sisters; and the Academic Mentoring Program, do hereby proclaim January 2008, to be IOWA CITY MENTO~:ING MONTH and urge all citizens to honor the role models in their lives by becoming mentors to youth in their community. Wade, the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court establishing a woman's Constitutional right to privacy in regards to her pregnancy options, thus re-legalizing abortion in the United States; and Whereas, the rights and responsibilities of women to choose the most appropriate pregnancy option for herself and her family should be viewed within a human rights framework; Whereas, 37% .of women in the United States will have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old, making abortion the most requested outpatient procedure in our country - defining this as basic healthcare for women; Whereas, the Emma Goldman Clinic was founded by local women determined to provide a range of quality affordable reproductive healthcare for women in a respectful, non- judgmental, and caring atmosphere; and Whereas, the Emma Goldman Clinic is viewed nationally as being one of the model feminist non- profit health care providers in the United States, Whereas, we celebrate the contributions to the Iowa City and surrounding communities that the Emma Goldman Clinic, its dedicated staff and its faithful volunteers have made over the past thirty four years; NOWT therefore, I, Regenia Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim January 21 - 27, 2008, to be Celebration of Roe v. Wade Week in Iowa City and encourage all citizens to recognize our community's leadership role in providing high- quality, affordable healthcare to women.
