P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans
of Foreign Wars of the United States has been
officially recognized and endorsed by govern-
mental leaders since 1922, and
WHEREAS, VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled vet-
erans and the proceeds of this worthy fund-raising
campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of
disabled and needy veterans, and the widows and
orphans of deceased veterans, and
WHEREAS, the basic purpose of the annual sale of Buddy
Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars is elo-
quently reflected in the desire to "Honor the Dead
by Helping the Living",
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 20 and 21,
1985, as BUDDY POPPY DAYS in Iowa City, and urge
the citizens of this community to recognize the
merits of this cause by contributing generously to
its support through the purchase of Buddy Poppies
on the days set aside for the distribution of
these symbols of appreciation for the sacrifices
of our honored dead.

WHEREAS, for nearly thirty-five years the American Business i
Women's Association has been building a tradition
based on its continuing efforts to provide opportuni-
ties for educational advancement to women, and

WHEREAS, business, economic and social analyses indicate that
as women continue to enter the work force and attain .
increasingly responsible positions, they will contri-
bute to the betterment of business and communities,
and I,
WHEREAS, last year ABWA s more than 2,100 local chapters I '
awarded over $2 million in scholarships to women, and
in addition, the Association's national scholarship 1
fund has awarded scholarships surpassing $2.5 million
since its inception in 1953, and { "

WHEREAS, the members of the American Business Women's Associa-
tion recognize that education and training are crucial
in today's technological society, and
WHEREAS, the ABWA chapters across the country to observing
September 22 as American Business Women's Day to I:
recognize the tremendous input women have made and
are making in the business world,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, in a salute to the business women of Iowa City,
do hereby proclaim September 22, 1985, as AMERICAN BUSINESS

ninety-eighth anniversary of the drafting
of the Constitution of the United States of
America by the Constitutional Convention,
and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper to accord official
recognition to this memorable anniversary
and to the patriotic exercise that will form
a noteworthy feature of the occasion, and
WHEREAS, Public Law No. 915 guarantees the issuing of
a proclamation each year by the President of
the United States of America designating
September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of
Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the week of
September 17 - 23, 1985, as CONSTITUTION WEEK
in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens
to pay special attention during this week to
our Federal Constitution and the advantage of
American Citizenship.
