P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, this year commemorates the 63rd anniversary of
Fire Prevention Week, and
WHEREAS, over the years Fire Prevention yleek has reminded
people of the importance of fire safety, and
WHEREAS, this year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is
"Fire Drills Save Lives" which reminds us of the
importance of fire drills at home, school, or
work and how to be prepared for fire no matter
where you are, and
WHEREAS, our local Fire Department will observe this week
with programs in all elementary schools, and
Fire personnel will be demonstrating our new
talking fire hydrant, showing fire safety films,
distributing fire safety information, and tours
will be scheduled through the fire stations,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, do hereby proclaim the week of October 6 - 12,
1985, as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Iowa City and
urge all residents to practice safety throughout
the entire year.

WHEREAS, the City of Iowa City is a local government unit
that strives to serve the public efficiently and
effectively, and
WHEREAS, cities, counties and school boards are partners
in public service and share a responsibility to
provide for the general welfare of the citizens
within their boundaries, and
WHEREAS, the public is best served through a free flow
of information, communication and understanding,
and
WHEREAS, Governor Terry Branstad has proclaimed that the
second week of October be designated as Local
Goverment Week in the State of Iowa to encourage
observance of local government in order to increase
public awareness of how they operate and what they
offer,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of October
7-12, 1985, as LOCAL GOVERNMENT WEEK in Iowa City,
and all citizens are encouraged to learn more about
the government of their City.

WHEREAS, for the past five years the Domestic Violence Project
has provided shelter to adults and their children who
are experiencing domestic violence, and
WHEREAS, during this time nearly 2,000 women and 500 children have
made use of the services offered by the Project, and
WHEREAS, family violence is receiving increasing public attention
as a major social/community concern, with estimates
indicating that some form of violence affects one out
of every four families, and
WHEREAS, the importance of a coordinated community response is
becoming increasingly apparent and that work by local
agencies, law enforcement and the Domestic Violence
Project has contributed towards that response, and
WHEREAS, the Domestic Violence Project is part of a nationwide
network of programs seeking to address the needs of
those affected by family violence, and
WHEREAS, the week of October 6 - 13, 1985, has been declared
National Domestic Violence Awareness Week by the
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and
WHEREAS, we want to demonstrate support for the work done
locally and acknowledge the five-year anniversary
of the Domestic Violance Project,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim October 6 - 13, 1985, as
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK in Iowa City.

WHEREAS, Keith Kafer has held the position of Executive
Vice President of the Iowa City Chamber of Com-
merce since November 1952, and
WHEREAS, during this period Keith Kafer has been the main
force behind the development of many major indus-
tries in Iowa City which provide employment for
hundreds of our residents as well as increasing
the tax base for our City, and
WHEREAS, Iowa City has been privileged to have as its
business community leader a man of the high prin-
ciples and talents which Keith has demonstrated
through the years, and
WHEREAS, Keith Kafer is retiring from his position with
the Chamber of Commerce on December 31, 1985, and
is being honored by his friends at a dinner on
September 24, 1985, and
WHEREAS, we wish to join Keith's many friends and business
acquaintenances in expressing appreciation for
the years of service and best wishes for a long
and happy retirement,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John McDonald, Mayor of the City of Iowa
City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 24, 1985,
as KEITH KAFER DAY in Iowa City and urge all citizens
to take this opportunity to express their appre-
ciation to this highly respected community leader.
