PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Sertoma International, a civic organization, the motto of which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week Program dedicated to the re-emphasis of the values and responsibilities of people in a free society, and WHEREAS, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence throughout its entire membership of Clubs, and WHEREAS, the Sertoma Clubs of Iowa City and Coralville support Freedom Week through their National Heritage Essay Contest, an essay contest for Eighth Grade students in Johnson County designed to emphasize and educate students on responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, and WHEREAS, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to Sertoma's Freedom Week. NOW, Therefore, I, Regenia Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim and designate the week of February 11th, 2008 to be SERTOMA'S FREEDOM WEEK in Iowa City and urge the citizens of this City to support the objectives of this program. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, many thousands of veterans of America's armed forces have served this nation in times of both peace and war and, in doing so, have thereby assured the independence of all her people, and Whereas, more than a million veterans enter the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers nationwide for medical attention annually, and Whereas, these hospitalized veterans who yet bear the physical and emotional scars of war have most surely earned our gratitude for the many personal sacrifices they have made on our behalf, and Whereas, the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, for the thirtieth consecutive year, have organized a national day of tribute honoring all hospitalized veterans with the purpose of urging Americans to remember these men and women, especially on this day, and Whereas, we wish to express to the patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers our concern, care, and sincere appreciation. NOW, therefore, I, Regenia Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim February 14, 2008, as Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Day in Iowa City, and urge all citizens to pay tribute to the hospitalized veterans on this day and each day of the year.
