April 23, 1982 Iowa City Council Civic Center Iowa City, Iowa Dear Council Members, The "Cadillac" treatment of the downtown sidewalks is attrac- tive. However, for the handicapped, very difficult to walk on. Also, uncomfortable to ride over in a wheelchair and make the chair hard to maneuver. I have only one leg and wear a full prosthesis, using a cane for better balance. Sloped sidewalks are almost impossible for me to walk oni either ascending or descending, or sloping sideways. Rather than a sloping surface, I can much better handle a step or two with a railing. Bricks and stones, such as the inserts along.Washington Street, present an uneven surface and make it very difficult to keep ones balance. They are slippery when wet, and if the -surface slopes they are impossible to traverse. I have never been able to walk down the,new Mall on College and Dubuque. I cannot walk in front of St.Clairs and Enzlers on Clinton because of the sloping sidewalk... When..walking from, the bus at the north end of Old Capitol Center, I have nearly fallen many times because of the slope of the walk and the slippery sur- face when wet. As you discuss the plans and make your deoision, please take these problems into consideration for all those who have difficulty in walking. Sincerely, ( r/Iae+F— De-rw Mrs, George R.
