As an artist w+th a specialization in the production of public art and as an art historian, I am able to offer a
passionate and multi -faceted perspective to the Public Art Advisory Committee. My current position as
Assistant Curator at the University of love Museum of Art is the summation of the nearly 8 years I have spent
working with public art initiatives, advocating for art education, and academic museums.
While pursuing both my first master's degree at University of Iowa and my second master's degree at Harvard
Wiversity, I simultaneously directed non-profit event spaces. In both lom City and Cambridge, I identified a
dire need for community art spaces, and developed programs to utilize the respective organizations 1 directed

Regarding my interest in the Parks and Recreation Commission, I hold an undergraduate degree in
environmental studies. Additionally, I have worked vdth both the Quad City Botanical Center and the Arnold
Arboretum to develop interpretive materials to enhance visitor experiences. Furthermore, my work as an artist
primarily concerns relationships between people and the natural world (you can view examples of this work
here: http://verorosesniith.coMrecentprojects.htrrd). Advocating for the care and maintenance of green spaces
is crucial to our community's future, and I would be honored to be a part of this commission.

3 years
3. Occupation:*
Art Director / Assistant Director of Art and Design -
University of lova
4. Gender:*
Female
5. Experience and/or activities which you feel qualify you for this position:*
I was thrilled to discover the open position on the Public Art Advisory Committee. As a longtime resident of
Cedar Rapids, I worked as a packaging designer for two companies until accepting the position of Creative
Coordinator in Marketing + Design for the Division of Student Life at the University of lova in 2012. 1 moved to
lova City three years -ago and have been increasing my involvement in community art projects ever since. I
feel that this position would be a wonderful fit for my experience and current skill set.
My participation in public art projects started when I vas a junior In high school. Since that time, I have
completed public art for: mural for Cedar Rapids skate park (2002), two sculptures "Fly Wright - Just Plane Art"
(2003), four sculptures Coralville/lova City "Flerky on Parade" (2004), American Gothic painting "Picture
Perfect Parodies" (2005), two sculptures Clinton Light House project (2005), three sculptures "Flerky on
Parade" (2014), Coralville RAGBRAI "Ride the Red Carpet" Entrance (2015), 100 commissioned custom art
pieces Mercy Hospital donor project (2015).
Before attending college at lore State University, I worked as a jewelry apprentice and a welder. I've continued
my fine arts career learning wood working, pottery, painting, glass fusing, kiln firing, print making, collage and
fabric art. While studying graphic design at ISU I also maintained the position of Linden Hall president at old
RCA for two years and served on student government. This experience exposed me to parliamentary
procedure and the inner workings of a governing body.
Shortly after graduating from lova State University in 2006 with a BFA in Graphic Design, I started ny own
small business called "Chicken Scratch Studio". I create handmade objects in rry home studio - predominately
in metal, fabric, glass, and clay. As I've grown my business over the past decade, it has afforded me the
opportunity to sell at farmer's markets and gift shops in the Quad Cities, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo area. I
also maintain an online store to sell my products world-wide. Through my business venture, I began teaching
art classes to students in lova and Illinois and was invited to take 15 students to Italy in 2011. Most recently I
taught class at the Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids.
My work has been featured on KCRG, KW WL, and the KWQC "Paula Sands Live" program and published in
the Iowa Alumni Magazine, Davenport Radish Magazine, Who's Who in Shopper Marketing, Bulletin Magazine,
and the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Recently, I was interviewed for the Cedar Rapids Gazette feature article 'Made
in Iowa Artist - Crafting from Scratch" and most recently in the IOWA Wwdigital publication "The Art of the
Seal".
In rry career, I've received numerous honors for both my artistic ability and community involvement. Some of
my awards include: Top 15 supervisor from the University of lova (2016); 1 at place design winner in 30 and
poster design and 3rd place for promotional campaign from the Association of College Unions (2016);
American Advertising Award winner (2012-2014); and - most humbling of all - a Bravo award recipient
presented by the lova City/Coralville Area Conventions and Visitors Bureau (2015).
In lova City and the surrounding communities, I volunteer for Fur Fun Rescue as a foster home for abused and
neglected dogs, mentor up-and-coming artists with Kirkwood Workplace Learning Connection, and small
business owners and artists with the ICAD Entrepreneurial Development group. I co-chair the women's
empowerment and leadership comnittee for the University of lova Division of Student Life as yell as the lova
Memorial Union Recognition and Development Committee. I'm a member of the Lucas Farms network for my
local neighborhood as well as served on the RAGBRAI Hospitality Committee and worked as one of two artists
to design and build the RAGBRAI entrance in 2015. 1 also am a donor and volunteer for Girls on the Run,
Gems of Hope, March of Dimas, The American Cancer Society, and Dance Marathon.
In 2016, 1 was promoted to the role of Art Director/ Assistant Director of Art and Design for the Division of
Student Life Marketing + Design. In this role, I oversee one professional designer and 10 student designers.
Through my work with staff and students, I manage a $150,000 budget while administering supplemental
learning through real world projects. I am a strategic planner and a maximizer of talent; I take command in
situations when desired and work as a great partner with other leaders. I have an exceptional eye for detail
and strive to achieve to the highest level. My goal is to deliver comprehensive skill training by challenging
students and staff to produce top-level design and marketing campaigns. Our office serves over 125 on -
campus clients and my position allows me to partner with both design and marketing professors and
professionals in multiple colleges at the university. Most recently, I was the Art Director for the University of
Iowa's Presidential Inauguration and coordinated the completion of 16 original pieces of art "re -imagining" the
University of lows seal to commemorate the occasion and curate a public art experience at the event within
Rancher Auditorium.
My deep passion for art is at the heart of my accomplishments. My goal in my career is to inspire and train
students and fellow artists to create art and to develop their own careers by doing what they love. My personal
goals are creating original art for myself, feeding my passion, and giving back to the community through my
time and talent. M given the opportunity to take on this role, I would be excited to bring my experience and skills
to the committee. It would be energizing to serve with like-minded committee members as well as creating and
overseeing public art opportunities for student artists and working artists in the community. I was fortunate to
start my career in public art at a young age; it taught me the skills 1 needed to realize my dream of being a
professional artist. I would hope to afford this same opportunity to others.
6. What Is your present knowledge of each advisory board you are Interested Ing*
The current committee is comprised of 7 members; two of which are working design professionals. The
committee meets once monthly to review artist's submissions for public art projects and oversees creation and
installation of approved projects. The committee also reviews public gifts and oversees expenditures to the art
budget. The group focuses on community need and the benefit associated with public art projects within a
space. The members utilize their knowledge in the art field or respective areas to aid in the decision-making
process.

While pursuing both rry first master's degree at University of Iowa and my second master's degree at Harvard
University, I simultaneously directed non-profit event spaces. In both Iowa City and Cambridge, I identified a
dire need for community art spaces, and developed programs to utilize the respective organizations I directed
as a community art space. Creating space, physically and culturally, for art is one of my chief passions.
Regarding my interest in the Parks and Recreation Commission, 1 hold an undergraduate degree in
environmental studies. Additionally, I have worked with both the Quad City Botanical Center and the Arnold
Arboretum to develop interpretive materials to enhance visitor experiences. Furthermore, my work as an artist
primarily concerns relationships between people and the natural world (you can view examples of this work
here: http://verorosesMth.corrdrecentprojects.hlM). Advocating for the care and maintenance of green spaces
is crucial to our community's future, and I would be honored to be a part of this commission.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Vero Rose Smith
6. What is your present knowledge of each advisory board you are Interested In?*
I am aware that the Public Art Advisory Committee administers and determines the placement of public art, as
well as the logistics of commissioning new art works, and accepting gifts of art. Regarding the Parks and
Recreation Commission, I understand that this entity reviews policies rules, regulations, ordinances, and
budgets relating to public green spaces.
