At the time I worked there, PLI provided mandatory "continuing education" training and certification for all levels of law enforcement in many agencies of the states of Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and Florida. I have a background in education and have put this training" to use in various capacities, which has afforded me the '~,opportunityfo work with people of a wide variety of ages, ethnicities, levels of ~,d,~uration, settings/locales, socio-economic levels, careers, and interests. I am intimately acquainted with ~~st amount of protocol law enforcement is tasked with carrying out, and I want to ensure both they and the public can count on officers receiving adequateoa~nd appropriate examination, and, should an incident warrant it, officers receiving discipline, reduction in rank and1pay, or discharge. I have served on a jury, and I like to think of my work as an educator and technical communicator in that capacity: I look at the facts and then make unbiased conclusions and recommendations. *I did my graduate work at the Ui, where I worked with students in classrooms of university town public schools (both standard and "alternative"), a parochial school, and an inner-city school in Houston, Texas. After receiving my Master's from the UI in Education in 1997, I served as a public school teacher, a volunteer adult literacy instructor, an instructional designer, a technical writer, and a legal editor. During this time, I helped create, edit, proctor, process, and evaluate many testing materials; no matter the audience, my approach was the same: Ensure the content is clear, error free, appropriate for the task and objectives at hand, and engaging-and responses are measurable. While I have not had any direct dealings with the planning & zoning commission, I am familiar with the function it serves. In researching the open seat I have read both the agendas and minutes of recent meetings. A business eject our company undertook in 2003 required specific use of the old zoning code to ensure that we were in ~.,,,mpliance. While 1 have reviewed the new code, 1 don't have extensive knowledge of all its contents. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? As a person who both lives and works in Iowa City, 1 have a keen interest in local issues that impact the future of this community. As an example, the business project I referred to in the previous answer involved opening a business in an established residential neighbofiood. That experience gave me a better understanding and appreciation of the (challenges that are faced when trying to integrate commercial structures with surrounding neighbofioods while (,maintaining the landscaping, pedestrian-friendly environment and overall integrity of the surrounding community. In addition, I believe that serving on the Planning 8~ Zoning Commission would provide me with the opportunity to serve a civic function on a commission that plays an important role in determining the direction that this community goes with respect to sensible growth and development. I believe that I bring a balanced perspective to such a position and would approach the responsibility with an open mind and willingness to listen, learn and serve.
