HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-09-09 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, on September 5, 1958, Dottie Ray first broadcast her radio program in Iowa City, and on September 5, 2008, Dottie Ray will celebrate fifty years of producing and presenting that special program, and; Whereas, 12,780 interviews over a cup of coffee on the "The Dottie Ray Show" have highlighted every aspect of life that makes Iowa City atop-rated "livable" city, and; Whereas, Dottie Ray has presented Iowa City with 27,445 interesting, lively, and informative conversations with our neighbors, friends, and leaders of all ages, and; Whereas, Dottie Ray's program on KXIC radio has contributed to the success of each of our many unique local projects, programs, partnerships and fundraisers for fifty years. Now therefore, be it resolved, that I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim September 5, 2008 as "Dottie Ray Day" in the City of Iowa City, Iowa, and encourage all residents to honor the golden radio anniversary of our beloved Dottie Ray. ~ Sign`~d in Iowa City, Iowa, this 9th day of September, 2008. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, suicide is the 11`h leading cause of all deaths in the United States and the 3rd leading cause of death among people from the age of 15 to 24; WHEREAS, suicide is the 9th leading cause of all deaths in the state of Iowa and in the United States, one person completes suicide every 16 minutes; WHEREAS, it is estimated that 4.6 million people in the United States are survivors of suicide (those who have lost a loved one to suicide); WHEREAS, the stigma associated with mental illness works against suicide prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking lifesaving help; and the stigma associated with suicide further traumatizes survivors of suicide; WHEREAS, statewide suicide prevention efforts should be developed and encouraged to the maximum extent possible; WHEREAS, the Crisis Center is dedicated to reducing the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths and the pain of survivors affected by suicides of loved ones, urges that we: 1. Recognize suicide as a national and state public health problem and declare suicide prevention to be a priority; 2. Encourage initiatives based on the goals contained in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention: A. Promote awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable. B. Develop and implement strategies to reduce the stigma of being a consumer of mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention services; C. Develop and implement community-based suicide prevention programs; D. Increase access to mental health and substance abuse services; E. Improve reporting and portrayals of suicidal behavior, mental illness, and substance abuse in the entertainment and news media; and WHEREAS, most suicides are preventable; THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED that, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby designate September 7 through September 13, 2008, as Suicide Prevention Week in Iowa City.
