HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-10-06 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the City of Iowa City recognizes the rights of our citizens who are blind or otherwise disabled to the equality, opportunity, independence, and freedom enjoyed by all of our citizens; and Whereas, we also support our citizens who are blind in their pursuit of social and economic independence, as well as full participation in the life of our community; and Whereas, we understand that, in order to pursue these goals, our citizens who are blind must have the freedom to travel about the community safely and independently; and Whereas, we recognize that these rights, symbolized by the long white cane, have been protected through legislation passed on the local, state, and federal levels, particularly Chapter 216C of the Code of Iowa,. which is also known as the White Cane law. NOW, therefore, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim October 15, 2008 to be White Cane Safety Day and call upon the people of Iowa City to recognize and respect the rights of our blind citizens and to observe the law applicable to their access to our streets, highways, public employment, and public facilities. Signed in Iowa City, Iowa this 6th day of October, 2008 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, mental illness is a disease that does not discriminate affecting all ages, genders, races, and economic levels; and Whereas, the stigma surrounding mental illness is a major barrier to care; and Whereas, the Community Mental Health Center for Mid-Eastern Iowa is dedicated to improving lives through high quality, accessible mental health services and to promoting awareness of mental health issues in the community; and Whereas, the Community Mental Health Center for Mid-Eastern Iowa is celebrating its 40`" anniversary providing mental health service to our community; and Whereas, the week of October 5, 2008 is National Mental Illness Awareness Week; NOW, therefore, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim the month of October 2008 to be Community Mental Health Month in the City of Iowa City, in celebration of the 40 years the Community Mental Health Center for Mid-Eastern Iowa has been treating mental illness and improving lives and quality of life for our entire community.
