WHAT IS PROJECT GREEN?
PROJECT GREEN is a gathering of people who believe that effective improvement
of their community landscape can result from their contribution of time, ideas,
energy and money..
Project GREEN is not an organization in the usual sense. It is not ,a garden
club; it is not meeting -oriented. It is a loosely -structured group of varied
citizens, working in diverse, and changing ways toward the goal symbolized by
our name: GREEN -Grow to Reach Environmental Excellence -Now.
In 1968, we started towards our long range aim of a general improvement in the
appearance of the community. Major tree planting projects carried out by our
volunteers have made approaches to the Citymore pleasant along Iowa Avenue,
Highway 6 By -Pass East, Melrose Avenue and Gilbert Street. -;:In --the downtown'
area, visual improvement accomplished by the mini parks and the Chauncey
Swan Plaza have initiated a new appreciation of landscape amenities for
public benefit.
As the seasons have passed, we have demonstrated that community betterment is
the continuing result when individuals, business people, city -.and county govern-
ment and schools, can actively cooperate on; programs -for environmental
improvement. - r
The opportunity to be a part of Project GREEN is always available to any
interested or concerned person.
WE ACTIVELY ENDORSE AND SUPPORT _
Comprehensive long range planning for optimum land use and future area
development
Protection of open space and future green belt development of the
Iowa River and the Ralston Creek corridor ==
Professional design consultation for all public works improvements -
and amenities relating to streets, sidewalks, bicycle paths ,'parking
lots, landscape plantings and
_conservation ,projects .`
High quality maintenance of landscape amenities provided for public
benefit
Adoption of a plan for the protection, and conservation of areas and
structures of significant historic or_ architectural note
Educational programs that promote these goals
A general public meeting in the fall, welcomes newcomers and.explains the
program. Through the year a steering committee establishes policy priorities
of -possible -major projects, develops schedules and directs_; programs and
activities, which are, carried out by volunteers. Cormianication`among workers
and supporters is, maintained through a comprehensive'biannual NEWSLETTER and
throughtimelynewspaper-and-radio announcements. -

City Council and Council Members -Elect
Abbie Stolfus, City Clerk
Swearing-in Ceremony
According to State law and City ordinance, all newly elected and reelected
members of the City Council must be sworn in prior to noon on Friday,
January 2. An organizational meeting also must be held to elect a mayor,
mayor pro -tem and to appoint the City Clerk and City Attorney. The Council
can take no official action until after noon on.January 2 when the new
Council becomes the official governing body of the City._
To comply with both aspects of the law, it would appear practical to hold
a swearing-in ceremony at 11:45 A.M. on January 2 and hold the organizational-
meeting at noon. If, for some reason, a member of the new Council cannot
be available at that time, we can scheduletheswearing-in ceremony at an
earlier time and hold the organizational meeting at noon, as long as a
Council quorum is present. Please notify us as:soon as possible if you
are available for a 11:45 A.M. swearing-in ceremony and noon organizational
meeting."
