Whereas, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program has worked to end violence in
intimate relationships for more than 38 years through the collaborative partnerships of
advocates, volunteers, local municipalities, criminal justice, health and human services,

How Can I
Help?
Here are 4 things you can do
to help adults and children
affected by domestic violence.
Donate your time. If you can drive
a car, pick up donations, play with
children, help out in an office or do
maintenance — you're just the
person we're looking for! Just a
few hours a week can make a world
of difference.
2. Learn as much as you can about
domestic violence. Learning about
domestic violence and community
resources is the first step. The
second step is sharing the
information with someone you care
about.
3. Next time you go shopping, pick
up some extra supplies for the
shelter. If you can use it at home,
so can we! Contact our offices for
drop of locations in your area!

Safety & Dignity
... A Promise
We Must Keep.
DVIP's Mission
The Mission of the Domestic Violence
Intervention Program is to provide
comprehensive support and advocacy
services to victim/survivors, focusing on
immediate and long-term safety,
empowerment, dignity, and hope. In
collaboration with the community, we
strive to end domestic abuse through
education, accountability, and social
justice.
Domestic Violence
Affects Everyone
Domestic violence is a pattern of
behavior used to establish power
and control over another through
emotional attack, fear and
intimidation. Domestic violence
or battering often includes the
threat or use of violence; in Iowa
this violence is a crime. Battering
happens when one person
believes he or she is entitled to
control another.
DVIP is Confidential
All services provided are free and
confidential to anyone
experiencing relationship
violence.
DVIP is Inclusive
We do not discriminate based on
sexual orientation, gender
identity, race, color, age, religion,
political beliefs, mental or
physical disability, economic
standing or any other beliefs and
affiliations. We also understand
that safety and sobriety do not
always go hand in hand.
Anyone can be battered in an intimate
relationship: heterosexual,
homosexual, people of all social,
economic, racial, religious and ethnic
groups. But, by far, women are most
commonly battered, and typically by
their male intimate partner. Perhaps
someone you care about is in danger.
What follows are
some typical abusive behaviors:
• Violence, such as punches, slaps,
kicks, choking & pushing.
• Forced sex against your/their will.
• Put downs, name calling,
humiliation in front of others.
• Destroys property, injures pets or
displays weapons in a threatening
way.
• Controls whom time is spent with,
talks to, or where they go.
Threatens the children or flees
with the children.
Blames their actions, or minimizes
the severity.
• Forces them to make decisions out
of fear of what will be done.
• Uses/forces substance abuse to
control and manipulate.
