WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? __ I am a displaced resident of Park View Terrace, which sustained substantial flood damage in June 2008. My neighbors and I face continuing challenges to ensure environmentally safe and viable,~ecovery of the neighborhood. In this process, l have been richly educated about environment, ecology, flood recovery, and viable use of open, green space, to cite only a few. General Application March 2008 Page 3 of 7 Application for Robert Oppliger 1 of 1 Experiences and Activities Which You Feel Qualify You for This Position I have had a long standing involvement with activities supported by the Parks & Recreation Department. As a youth my father was the assistant director or our community's Pazks & Recreation Department, so I was an active participant in the many offerings. I have worked as a swimming instructor, lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, and swimming coach and still swim regulazly at Mercer Park. During the 30+ years that I have lived in Iowa City, I have been an active bicyclist both recreationally and as a commuter. For the past decade, I have been a soccer referee for the Kickers program and at the age-group and high school competitive level. I have significant interest in community service. I have served on the board of directors for the Master Gazdeners and Bicyclist of Iowa City and was one of the founders of Bike to Work Week in the early 90s. I have served on the organizing committee for the Iowa City Bike Criterion and several other organized bike events. Currently, I am secretary of the Iowa City Road Race Committee which organizes the fall Run for the School Road Race and serve on the current Bike to Work Week Committee. Professionally, I have interest in promoting physical activity and fitness and have served continuously since 1992 on committees for my professional organization, the American College of Sports Medicine. What Is Your Knowledge of this Advisory Board? I'm familiar in general with the Board's role in providing general oversight and input to Parks & Recreation Department activities. Also, I followed with interest the recent development of a strategic plan and the value it might have in providing guidance as Iowa City grows. As a bicyclist, I was particulazly interested in the strategic plan's priorities for developing a trail system. I am one of the citizens who have encouraged Iowa City to regain its designation as a Bike Friendly Community. What Contributions Do You Feel You Can Make to this Advisory Board I have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, which have served me well in civic and professional committee activities. I have good critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and evaluate information and prioritize needs and activities. Through my professional work and travel, I have been exposed to ways that other communities provide opportunity for recreation and believe this may be of value as a board member. 3 e ,~ ~~ • '; ':! wE E .. , , .. .._ a'~ _~ Y ~~ . +'° . . ety ~:~ City of Iowa City ~ r ..m Advisory BoardlCommissionlCommittee ~~ ~'~~ w~,a°~~~ `,pplication Form -~- CITY OF IOWA CITY Individuals serving on Boards/Commissions/Committees play an important role in advising the Council on matters of interest to our community and its future.
