HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-01-06 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the arts and cultural activities in the Corridor are an essential part of our quality of life that enhances livability in all Corridor communities; and Whereas, the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance provides a significant and meaningful role bringing arts and cultural organizations and patrons together; and Whereas, it is important to celebrate the role of arts and culture in our lives and the contributions made by the creative class of working artists and performers in not only helping to attract and retain all kinds of professional workers but also improving our quality of life; and Whereas, the arts and cultural organizations provide employment for more than 2,000 workers throughout the Corridor; and Whereas, arts and cultural organizations provide more than $64 million in income spent in Corridor communities in a given year; and Whereas, the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance Icky Awards Ceremony is the annual celebration honoring innovation and excellence in arts and culture programming in the Corridor and is a much anticipated event in the arts community, Now, therefore, I, Regenia D. Bailey, do hereby proclaim Monday, January 26, 2009 as Arts and Culture Day and call upon the people of Iowa City to join their. fellow citizens in recognizing, celebrating and participating in this special observance. Wade, the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court establishing a woman's Constitutional right to privacy in regards to her pregnancy options, thus re-legalizing abortion in the United States; and Whereas, the rights and responsibilities of women to choose the most appropriate pregnancy option for herself and her family should be viewed within a human rights framework; and Whereas, 37°Io of women in the United States will have an abortion by the time they are 45 years old, making abortion the most requested outpatient procedure in our country-defining this as basic healthcare for women; and Whereas, the Emma Goldman Clinic was founded by local women determined to provide a range of quality affordable reproductive healthcare for women in a respectful, non judgmental, and caring atmosphere; and Whereas, the Emma Goldman Clinic is viewed nationally as being one of the model feminist non-profit health care providers in the United States; and Whereas, we celebrate the contributions to the Iowa City and surrounding communities that the Emma Goldman Clinic, its dedicated staff and its faithful volunteers have made over the past thirty five years. Now, therefore, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim January 19 - 25, 2009, to be Celebration of Roe v.
