EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION:
During my time in Iowa City, I have lived in 4 historic homes. My last home was honored with the historic
preservation award when it was renovated. My current home is a 1920's Dutch colonial that I have extensively
renovated while preserving the historical integrity. This includes re-using period windows and dorms, re-doing the
plaster instead of installing drywall, installing reproduction pushbutton light switches instead of new switches,
installing period cabinetry, maintaining/installing period tiling and bathroom fixtures, and maintaining the overall
historical integrity of the home. I've always had a deep appreciation of classic architecture and the unreplicable
character it brings to a neighborhood. I have hands-on experience doing a complete renovation of a historic home,
so I can appreciate the challenges and details involved.
Misrepresentations on this application will constitute just cause for removal of an appointee. If you fail

I am a displaced resident of Park View Terrace, which sustained substantial flood damage in June 2008.
My neighbors and 1 face continuing challenges to ensure environmentally safe and viable~ecovery of the
neighborhood. In this process, I have been richly educated about environment, ecology, flood recovery,
and viable use of open, green space, to cite only a few. My first-hand experience of battling with flood
recovery, I believe, will no doubt assist the Commission to offer an informed decision-making advice to
the City Council. In addition, part of my teaching expertise concerns disaster and global warming. Thus,
my research interest has substantial elements that are of interest for the Council in order to f~+lfill its `-_
mission as a guarantor of environmentally safe and secure city. y

Experiences and Activities Which You Feel Qualify You for This Position
I have had a long standing involvement with activities supported by the Parks &
Recreation Department. As a youth my father was the assistant director or our
community's Parks & Recreation Department, so I was an active participant in the many
offerings. Ihave worked as a swimming instructor, lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor,
Water Safety Instructor Trainer, and swimming coach and still swim regularly at Mercer
Park. During the 30+ years that I have lived in Iowa City, I have been an active bicyclist
both recreationally and as a commuter. For the past decade, I have been a soccer referee
for the Kickers program and at the age-group and high school competitive level.
I have significant interest in community service. Ihave served on the board of directors
for the Master Gardeners and Bicyclist of Iowa City and was one of the founders of Bike
to Work Week in the early 90s. Ihave served on the organizing committee for the Iowa
City Bike Criterion and several other organized bike events. Currently, I am secretary of
the Iowa City Road Race Committee which organizes the fall Run for the School Road
Race and serve on the current Bike to Work Week Committee. Professionally, Ihave
interest in promoting physical activity and fitness and have served continuously since
1992 on committees for my professional organization, the American College of Sports
Medicine.
What Is Your Knowledge of this Advisory Board?
I'm familiar in general with the Board's role in providing general oversight and input to
Parks & Recreation Department activities. Also, I followed with interest the recent
development of a strategic plan and the value it might have in providing guidance as
Iowa City grows. As a bicyclist, I was particularly interested in the strategic plan's
priorities for developing a trail system. I am one of the citizens who have encouraged
Iowa City to regain its designation as a Bike Friendly Community.
What Contributions Do You Feel You Can Make to this Advisory Board
I have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, which have served me
well in civic and professional committee activities. Ihave good critical thinking skills
and the ability to analyze and evaluate information and prioritize needs and activities.
Through my professional work and travel, I have been exposed to ways that other
communities provide opportunity for recreation and believe this may be of value as a
board member.

WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
The Parks and Recreation Commission reports to the City Council on recommendations regarding policies,

WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE
REASON FOR APPLYING)?
Our home is adjacent to City Park and numerous suggestions have been made about the opportunity Iowa City has
to enhance the riverfront recreational facilities and trails; I would enjoy being able to contribute to that discussion and
to contribute to the recovery of our community resources following the flooding of 2008.
I am active with a variety of groups that promote healthy family-centered activities and feel that this helps provide me
with a knowledge of what types of improvements and additions would benefit the recreational and cultural facilities
Iowa City has to offer.

Subject: Parks and Recreation Commission Advisory Board application
I am applying for a four year term on the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
After graduating from high school in Cedar Rapids I attended St John's University in Collegeville, MN,
planning to major in Forestry. I took courses in forestry, ecology and biological sciences before
attending medical school at the University of Iowa. I have been a resident of Iowa City since 1981. I
am an avid gardener and have spent a considerable amount of time learning about native plantings and
sustainable gardening and turf practices for this area. I have had a lifelong affinity for outdoor recreation
and frequently use many of the parks and trails in the area. In the course of raising four children in Iowa
City I have had the opportunity to experience activities in nearly all the recreational facilities Iowa City
has to offer.
Our home is adjacent to City Park and numerous suggestions have been made about the opportunity
Iowa City has to enhance the riverfront recreational facilities and trails; I would enjoy being able to
contribute to that discussion and to contribute to the recovery of our community resources following the
flooding of 2008.
I am active with a variety of groups that promote healthy family-centered activities and feel that this
helps provide me with a knowledge of what types of improvements and additions would benefit the
recreational and cultural facilities Iowa City has to offer.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
Tom Novak
