As I see it, this would definitely increase Iowa Cityls opportunitiesofbecoming the Bi -Centennial City in 1976 - if in addition.to our beautifully rE - stored Capitol building, we had an authentic historic look tothesurrounding downtown section. It would bring tourists from fa.r and wide- and wouldn't that be a -boon to businEss? Of course, I realize that the state of Illinois is more -affluent -than Iowa, but itSEEMs to mE==that we might do something in the st.vle of what has been accomplishedaround theState Capitol of Illinois in Springfield If any of you havelvisited this beauti- ful restoration, I am sure you wouldn't ask for any- thing more attractive -for Iowa City. Clearly there are tradeoffs when attempting to add three areas when adding only one bus to the system. Because -of the tradeoffs in service, Alternative 4 is recommended for immediate implementation,, along -with the construction of a side wide and/or roadway between Lakeside and Bon A - ire Service to and from Wardway would be too low to, justify, service which Would necessitate so much inconvenience to existing patrons. If, ontheother- hand the, Council feels provision of service to Mark --IV, Wardway and Bon Aire.warrants service reductions in other parts of the system, Alternative I is recommended. Given the objective of serving three new areas (Mark IV, Wardway,_ and Bon Aire) without increasing total operating costs, the City staff was faced with an almost impossible assignment. The staff was able to design a routing system that provided the desired service, - however. Given an opportunity to examine-the Proposal in detail, we are ` ` concerned with possible reductions in-service which might result from the proposed changes '- In particular, we,- noted that the proposed West Benton route, would not provide direct routing to the hospital area for -the -Mark IVa'nd Benton-street.-residents. Also, we noted that through service to the hospital area would be eliminated for the people using the Towncrest route. In view of the above service questions, we attempted to obtain some actual data through limited surveys. Riders were placed on the West Benton - Town-crest routes during both. peak periods and once in the afternoon on Thursday, April 11th. Boarding and alighting data was collected from a total of-5-trips on each of the routes. Table 1 provides a summary of the data collected on the West Benton route. Of particular interest is the relatively high percentage of people that ride the West Benton bus from the westsid-ei area to the hospital.
