HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-02-10 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION whereas, many thousands of veterans of America's armed forces have served this nation in times of both peace and war and, in doing so, have thereby assured the independence of all her people, and whereas, more than a million veterans enter the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers nationwide for medical attention annually, and whereas, these hospitalized veterans who yet bear the physical and emotional scars of war have most surely earned our gratitude for the many personal sacrifices they have made on our behalf, and Whereas, the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, for the thirtieth consecutive year, have organized a national day of tribute honoring all hospitalized veterans with the purpose of urging Americans to remember these men and women, especially on this day, and whereas, we wish to express to the patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers our concern, care, and sincere appreciation. NOW, therefore, I, Regenia D. Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, This I0`~' day of February, 20b9 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, congenital heart defects are America's #1 birth defect and the leading cause of all infant deaths in the United States; and Whereas, each year approximately 40,000 babies are born in the United States with a congenital heart defect, nearly one of every 100 babies. Thousands of them will not reach their first birthday and thousands more die before they reach adulthood; and Whereas, in the United States alone, twice as many children die from congenital heart defects each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined, yet funding for pediatric cancer research is five times higher than funding for CHD; and Whereas, hundreds of children are treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics annually for CHD. "Heart Friends" is an Iowa based support group that provides support to families affected by congenital heart defects; and is comprised of 180 families throughout the state and surrounding areas who have children with heart disease. NOWT therefore, I, Regenia D.
