Dear Sirs;
As residents of Lee Street we have genuine concern over
the possibility that 'parking will be removed from both sides
of our street. There_ are certain difficulties inherent in.
such a, plan. Lee Street is bounded on one end by Park Road, -
Oil which there is no parking, on the other end, by River Road,
on which there is no parking. There is no intersecting street.
tiighwood goes only to the 'right 'and is one block in length
divided by four driveways.iThis;means 'that there is very
little ,parking possible within any reasonable distancefrom''
our: homes.
lnIn most cases when parking is ,removed from a major,
thoroughfare there are cross streets with available parkimg
within "'a half block of any home. This isnot the 'case on
Lee Street. In addition those of us on the, lower end of
Lee Street have in several cases steep driveways built
long before this situation arose. These driveways are'not
suitable for ,Quest parking or for the parking of large
delivery or maintenance trucks. We would like to change
them but this is not possible. L2 parking would isolate
us from friends. Entertaining would not belpossible
especially for those of us who would have to ask our
guests to navigate two and a half blocks up a steep hill -
hazardous walking in winter time.
We have accepted and will continue to accept the necessity
for parking on one 'side; only. This makes.good sense. But
w are deeply concerned about the effect of no parking
on our normal lives and those of our neighbors. :
Our opposition to no parking is not opposition to the
bus service. We greatly appreciate and use the bus daily.
There is little traffic on Lee Streot so that the bus has
not presented a traffic problem t.o.us, nor has it seemed
to create any? traffic problem.
Wo hope you will give serious consideration to the unique
problems of our street,
Sincerely yours',

Dear Mayor:
As you are well aware, the Iowa State Highway Commission has released
its new. Five. -year Program involving construction throughout the State of
Iowa on Primary highways, as well as the Interstate system. It becomes
annarent quite rapidly that the Commission and its funding will never
catch up in the development of the Freeway system and repair and improve-
ment of Primaries that are needed throughout our State under present
funding conditions:
Commissioner, Robert Rigler has suggested the possibility of bonding for
highway improvements within the State. His contention is that a certain
percentage of the Freeway system could be contracted and completed each
year for eight or ten years with the bond money and in turn the Primary
system would be more rapidly improved. The State of Kansas has just
recently instituted a'bonding program that probablymost closely fits the
kind of program Mr. Rigler`is speaking of.
Senator Bart Schwieger of Waterloo intends to introduce legislation during
this session of the Iowa Legislature to allow bonding specifically for the
purposes of completing,Highwari520 from Sioux City.to Dubuque. I,personally,
agree wholeheartedly with the Commissioner and with Senator Schwieger and
suggest to you that our endorsement of this kind of program could be of great
benefit. Your reaction to this kind of program is most important. Would you
kindly respond to this letter so that I may have an indication from you in
carrying the idea forward.
Looking forward to }fearing from you very shortly.
Yours ,very truly,

Dear Mr. Mayor:
I am responding to the proposal before the City Council that parking
be eliminated on some of the: streetsdesignated as "bus routes." b
am.a_resident of 421_Lee Street and -would-be directly affected by
this decision. As a;'newcomer to the town, I have been most'. impressed
With the promptness and convenience of the,Iowa City bus, service. It
is obbious'that there are several streets;in this town which make (`
maneuvering a large bus extremely difficult. I also realize that it
is 'much easier to put forth 'a blanket proposal rather than make an'!'
individual ,ldecision :for each" involved street. L trust'that'the
underlying thought was that individual consideration for exceptions
would be permitted when requested by members of the, community.
It is in this vein that I would like to request closer scrutiny of
the hardship that such a move would make on the residents of Lee Street.
To disallow parking on such a street where there is often little
alternative ':because'of its :unique terrain and access, would certainly
notbe desirable. On the other hand, we are enjoying our newly -granted
bus service and to withdraw the bus from our street would also not be
desirable. It is my request that the problem of Lee Street be given,
individual consideration for possible exception to the proposed decision.
Sincerely yours,
John P. Albright, M.D.
