Dear Mayor Brandt:
Thank you for your telegram concerning the status of Department
of Housing and,Urban Development grants to Iowa City.
I can understand and share your concern about the effect'ter-

'been deeply concerned about the approach taken by HUD in regard to
city programs „'as you `':The 'Senate ;Subcommittee :'on Housing and..:.
Urban Affairs is holding hearings during the next three weeks'jn

Iowa City;''Iowa
Dear Mayor Brandt,
Upon having become aware of the habit of extreme wastofulness:us Americans
have, gotten into, compared to other countries, I have naturally become interested
also in the recycling of waste materials. I now have ahitnongous stack of newspapers
and no way to relieve myself of them, except to haul them down to City Carton or
Capital oil, this :being extremely difficult to do as my only mode of transportation
is my bicycle. Arid what a pitiful waste to use up landfill area with this easily`'
reusable material.
I wonder why progressive Iowa City. the Athens of Iowa, does not have something
as simple as'a paperrecycling system such as other cities have started.' I really
find this hard to understand after I found and read "Newsprint= Recovering A
Valuable Resource For Iowa City" submitted by the Johnson County Commission on
Environmental Quality way back in February. I've gathered that no roil action
has been taken on it. Why has there been such a, procrastination of starting even
the, simple<Pilot project as proposed? Thank you.
