City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEKEAS, there are more than 1 million people in the United States living with HIV and one-fourth of them do not know they are infected; and the number of US women and girls living with HIV is on the rise; in 2006 women and girls age 13 and older represented 27% of new AIDS diagnosis, compared to 11 °1o in 1990; and WHEREAS, for women of all races and ethnicities, the largest number of HIV/AIDS diagnoses during recent years was for women aged 15-39; and women suffer gender-specific manifestations as a result of HN infection and respond differently to antiretroviral therapy; and WHEREAS, HIV infected women frequently have more difficulty accessing healthcare and subsequently are diagnosed at later stages than men; and obstacles such as caring for family and lack of social support may interfere with their adherence to treatment regimens; and WHEREAS, the theme of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2009 is "HN is right here at home," and WHEREAS, the purpose of the proclamation is to educate the public; and recognize the many organizations in Johnson County committed to working towards not only education, but also prevention; and WHEREAS, the intent of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is consistent with the activities of United Action for Youth, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa, Iowa City Center, Iowa Center for AIDS Resources and Education, Johnson County Public Health and Emma Goldman Clinic. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the day of March 10, 2009, to be National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day And encourage all residents to recognize that we need to expand and support education opportunities for women and girls to address the harmful effects of inequality that exist for women in both social settings and sexual relationships. ayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 24`h day of February, 2009.
