WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
Having served two terms on the commission, I understand the role of the commission in approving applications from
property owners, educating the public about preservation, encouraging stewardship of the built environment, and
upholding the Secretary of the Interior's standards.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE
REASON FOR APPLYING)?
I believe I keep an open mind concerning both the needs of the property owner and the mission and mandate of the
commission. Twenty-plus years as an editor of Iowa history have given me a rich understanding of what the built
environment can tell us about the past, and a deep desire to educate the public about the importance and
advantages of preservation. During my years in Iowa City-as a student, renter, and property owner-I have
developed an affection for the town's older neighborhoods and a respect for the delicate ba-ance between
preservation and change. _
