Whereas, tobacco smoke is the third leading of preventable
death in and
Whereas, 65,000 people die each year as a result g the smoke of
others' cigarettes,
Whereas, studies prove there is r safe environmental tobacco
smoke; and
Whereas, in March of 1999. cam Iowa City for a conference on

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, environmental tobacco smoke is the third leading cause of preventable
death in the United States; and
Whereas, 65,000 people will die each year as a result of breathing the smoke of
others' cigarettes, including approximately 500 Iowans; and
Whereas, studies prove there is no safe level of exposure to environmental tobacco
smoke; and
Whereas, in March of 1999, C. Everett Koop came to Iowa City for a conference on
lung cancer at The University of Iowa and encouraged restaurants to provide
smoke-flee dining facilities; and
Whereas, in the spring of 2000, the Johnson County Tobacco Free Coalition formed
CAF]~ (Clean Air For Everyone) to educate the community about hazards of
secondhand smoke; and
Whereas, in January of 2002, the Iowa City City Council passed a smoke-flee
restaurant ordinance to protect the health of all residents of Iowa City; and
Whereas, in March of 2002, Iowa City's smoke-free restaurant ordinance became
effective.
Now, therefore, in recognition of this important life-saving effort, I, Ernest W.
Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of
March 2003 to be
Breath of Fresh Air Month
in Iowa City and, in doing so, encourage all residents to support this important health
initiative by dining in their favorite Iowa City smoke-free restaurants.

Whereas, food is a substance by which life is sustained; and
Whereas, the type and quality of food that individuals consume each day plays
a vital role in their overall health and physical fitness; and
Whereas, there is a need for continuing nu~tion education and a wide-scale
effort to enhance good eating practices.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W, Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March to be
National Nutrition Month
in Iowa City, and I encourage all citizens to join the campaign and become
concerned about their nutrition and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving
optimum health for both today and tomorrow.

Whereas, Special Olympians have a strong desire to compete and win;
and
Whereas, Special Olympians know that bravery is measured in setting
goals and attempting to reach them; and
Whereas, Special Olympians recognize the joy, pride and self-worth,
humility and disappointment, inherent in organized competition; and
Whereas, Special Olympians appreciate the benefits that healthy
competition and physical activity can bring; and
Whereas, Special Olympians give the entire community a chance to gather
and share in their spirit of accomplishment;
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2003 to be
Special Olympics Month
in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens to commend and support the
activities of the Special Olympics.

Mid-Winter Tournament March 14 & 15
University of Iowa Fieldhouse
The Mid-Winter Tournament will bring over 1100 Special
Olympic Athletes and their coach's to the Iowa City area to
compete in: Basketball, Basketball Skills, Cheerleading,
Gymnastics and Power Lifting.
Once the athletes arrive in Iowa City all their expenses are
covered through the proceeds of our fundraising event,

Our committee would like to Thank Coach Alford & our
Major Sponsors: L.L. Pelling, General Mills & Hills Bank.
Coach Alford has so generously donated his time and support
to Special Olympics and our Major event sponsors through
their sponsorships.
The area businesses are so important with their donations of
services and auction items, without them we could not enjoy
the success we have had and hope to continue.
Of course we can not forget the Council for once again giving
our Special Olympics Athletes the recognition they so deserve,
by making March "Special Olympics month."
