Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim June 2009 to be Pride Month Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 16`" day of June, 2009. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, each year, the Johnson County community comes together to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays, and; WHEREAS, during the 25th year of Relay For Life, the communities of Johnson County will celebrate the lives of those who have had cancer, remember those lost, and fight back against this disease, and; WHEREAS, there are an estimated 11.1 million Americans with a history of cancer alive today; and WHEREAS, this year alone, more than 1.4 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States; and more than 16,700 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Iowa, and; WHEREAS, money raised during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Johnson County helps support research, education, advocacy and patient services; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim June 15-20, 2009 as Relay For Life Week in Iowa City, Iowa and encourage citizens to participate in Relay For Life of Johnson County at Clear Creek Amana High School on June 19-20, 2009. What started as one man's passion in Tacoma, Washington, has grown to a one-of-a-kind event in 5,000 communities and 20 countries. Communities around the globe unite to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back to end a disease that has taken too much. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Johnson County unites the communities of Johnson County in the fight against cancer. This year, we are asking for your assistance by proclaiming Relay For Life week or day for Iowa City. This year's event will be held Friday, 3une 19 beginning at 7:00 p.m. -Saturday, June 20 at 7:00 a.m. at Cleaz Creek Amara High School in Tiffin. The schedule of events includes opening ceremonies, honoring of cancer survivors, the Iuminaria ceremony, music entertainment, food, a basket raffle, and children's games.
