EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION:
10 years experience in wholesale food industry management (Blooming Prairie Warehouse, 1978-1988) -- helping
create and develop a business from a small operation in a rented space to amulti-million dollar cooperative
business that purchased land, built and continually expanded its operations. I've lived in Iowa City as a renter, as a
home owner and as a home owner & landlord. I experienced first-hand the problems created when unrestricted
growth compromised neighborhood safety, strained community resources, and contributed to longer term problems
associated with narrowly considered planning. I have extensive experience in collaborative working relationships,
conflict resolution, communication skills, and am able to listen closely to complex and controversial issues. I am
deeply committed to providing all parties in any given dispute a fair and impartial hearing.

WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
I have attended and observed the meetings of this board on an irregular basis for the past 12 years. I have read the
minutes of this board's meetings on a regular basis. My father was an HVAC contractor and I grew up working in his
shop and became keenly aware of a variety of zoning and variance issues that arose as part of his business with
commercial and residential properties both in new housing developments and historic neighborhoods.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE
REASON FOR APPLYING)?
The area of my hometown where I grew up went from mixed residential and commercial/agriculture (truck farms and
nurseries) to nearly 100% residential in less than 10 years. Since January 1975, I have lived in the Northside,
College Hill, Goosetown, and Longfellow neighborhoods. I am active in my neighborhood association and interested
in working with others to apply reasonable solutions that benefit individuals and the greater community.
I believe 'quality of life' in any community requires active, engaged, and well-informed discussion. Iowa City has
many critical issues concerning a consistent, fair, equitable application of codes in line with our Comprehensive Plan.
Growing up in a working class, small-business environment and learning how to both grow a successful business
and contribute to a more stable, inviting neighborhood as a home owner and a landlord...) believe thes~~are the
experiences that help guide the contributions I can deliver as a member of this board. `~ ' '`~'
