HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-03-11 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, recent U.S. Census figures show that more than 41 million Americans do not have health care coverage, and Whereas, eight out of 10 of the uninsured are in working families that cannot afford health insurance and are not eligible for public programs; and Whereas, uninsured Americans live sicker and die younger because they are forced to go without the health care they need; and Whereas, a slow economy, higher unemployment, and rising health costs mean more Americans are becoming uninsured in our community; and Whereas, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The California Endowment, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and several other organizations are cosponsoring "Cover the Uninsured Week" in an effort to sensitize the public to the plight of Americans without health insurance; and Whereas, this effort is cosponsored by former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and a diverse array of national organizations, including: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO, The Business Roundtable, Service Employees International Union, Health Insurance Association of America, Fanfilies USA, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, American Hospital Association, Federation of American Hospitals, Catholic Health Association of the United States, American Association of Retired Persons, and United Way of America; and Whereas, this effort and activities are sponsored locally by: Cover the Uninsured Week, the University of Iowa: Associate Provost for Health Sciences, AAMC-OSR, Carver College of Medicine, Center on Aging, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, Hygienic Laboratory, Health Sciences Volunteer Mobile Clinic, School of Social Work, Vice President for Health Affairs, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic; and Crisis Center of Johnson County, Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, SEIU Local 199, and Visiting Nurse Association. Now, therefore, i, Ernest w. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of March 10-16, 2003, to be Cover the Uninsured Week And ask all citizens to recognize the urgency of seeking solutions to one of America s prevalent problems and encourage you to support the week's activities.
