HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-06-30 Appointment22a NOTICE THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING COMMISSION: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION One Vacancy -Unexpired Term Effective upon appointment, ending March 29, 2011 For a Longfellow District Representative Duties of the Historic Preservation Commission include: conducting studies for the identification and designation of Historic Districts; reviewing and acting upon all applications for Certificate of Appropriateness; cooperating with property owners and city agencies regarding remedy of dangerous conditions; furthering the efforts of historic preservation in the City by making recommendations on preservation issues, when appropriate, by encouraging the historical, architectural or cultural value, and by encouraging persons and organizations to become involved in preservation activities. This Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m and, if necessary, the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Iowa City appointed members of the boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of Iowa City. Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2009. The City of Iowa City encourages diversity in the appointment of citizens to boards and commissions. As per above, the present financial issues will likely necessitate some difficult decisions. Understanding the library's budgeting process and the way its governance fits into the city takes time: as a board member with that knowledge, I believe I can help the ICPL to move through these times more seamlessly than if they were having to educate several new members. I also am passionate about the library and the value it brings to our community. In trying to decide whether to reapply, the question of whether I still felt passion for the orgazination came to the surface again and again. My answer is an unqualified "yes." I feel I am prepared for the task. My background in economics (utilities, regulation will be helpful. I never miss a meeting and I am diligent at being prepared for the meetings, including reading the material before hand, and doing some research on my own.
