Subject: Re: Safety Issue with Iowa City Pedestrian Bridges
Dear All,
Thank you so much for working together to allow the replacement of the old railing on the pedestrian
bridges with a new safer one. I, and the many people who will use it for years to come, appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Jean Walker

Subject: Poster of Melrose Neighborhood Garages
Dear Council Members,
With great help from Marcia Bollinger and the Office of Neighborhood Services, I have produced an 18
x 24-inch poster of some of the historic garages in the Melrose Neighborhood.
Our Neighborhood would like to present this poster to the City for display in City Hall so that the public
can enjoy this part of Iowa City's rich heritage. Interim City Manager Dale Helling has suggested that
the appropriate process would be to present it to the City Council and ask that it be displayed in City
Hall.
I would like to present this poster to the City Council at tonight's meeting during the time of public
comment.
Thank you,
Jean Walker

Presentation of a poster of Melrose Neighborhood
Garages to the Iowa City City Council
July 6, 2009
The Melrose Neighborhood would like to present the City
with this poster of some of our historic garages, with the
hope that it can be displayed in City Hall for the public to
enjoy.
It has both garages and carriage houses, thus showing the
transition from the use of carriages to the use of cars in the
Neighborhood.
The garages have many different styles and these styles
match those of the houses to which they belong, the houses
ranging in age from 1870 to the early 1950s. For example,
this carriage house, originally built as quarters for house
servants, belongs to a Greek revival-Italianate house built in
1870. This garage belongs to a house built in the early
1950s in the architectural style of Frank Lloyd Wright.
We hope that when people see this poster they will be
encouraged to take a detailed look at the architectures of the
houses and garages in their own neighborhoods -and that
they will value their garages as an integral part of their
properties along with their matching houses.
Thank you.
