City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club was chartered on February 22, 1921, just six years after the founding of the first Kiwanis Club in Detroit Michigan and three years before the founding of Kiwanis International; and Whereas, the mission of the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club is improving the world one child and one community at a time; and Whereas, the objects of the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club are To Give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of Life; To Encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships; To Promote the adoption and the applications of higher social, business, and professional standards; To Develop by precept and example; To Provide, through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendship; To Render altruistic service and to build a better community; To Cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and good will; and Whereas, the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club provides financial assistance and support to the Arc of Southeast Iowa, Any Given Child, Dream City, CommUnity Crisis Center and Food Bank, Domestic Violence Intervention Project, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, Salvation Army, Shelter House; and Whereas, in a joint project known as Camp Olympia Kiwanis with Iowa City Old Capitol Kiwanis and the Nebraska -Iowa Kiwanis District the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club provides funding, transportation and other assistance enabling four under -privileged Iowa City youth in 5th and 6th grade to attend a five-day summer camp in Boone Iowa; and Whereas, since 1947 the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club has annually provided the John E. Briggs Scholarship to a senior in the Iowa City Community School District or Regina Catholic Education Center who will be attending a college or university in Iowa ; and Whereas, the Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Club is a part of Kiwanis International, a group of over 550.000 members in over 80 countries and geographic areas worldwide. Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim February 22, 2021 as Iowa City Noon Kiwanis Day for 100 years of dedicated service and commitment to the Iowa City Community.
