'N (( ' V7v
City of Iowa City !'
PROCLAMATION47
e ;
Whereas, this week, we celebrate Welcoming Week as a way of creating home ;•
together with communities around the world. Welcoming Week is about bringing
neighbors together across lines of differences to build relationships and work together on
shared goals; and
Whereas, Iowa City is home to people of all backgrounds, including those who were
not born in Iowa City but now call it home and we recognize the importance of ensuring
that all community members feel safe, secure, and welcome; and
Whereas, recent events have highlighted the historic and current impacts of individual,
institutional, and systemic racism that result in harmful disparities in education,
employment, income, housing, criminal justice, and quality of life, as well as sense of
belonging; and
Whereas, our community, like others across the nation, has structures, systems, and
policies that contribute to injustice, racial inequality, and discriminatory treatment against
community members who were born in another country, are Black, Indigenous, other
People of Color, LGBTQ, and other identities; and
Whereas, to capitalize on diversity as an asset, our community must strive to create a
culture and policies that ensure everyone can belong and thrive by addressing disparities,
countering hate, understanding history, and helping neighbors come together; and
Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim
September 10 - 19, 2021 to be
Iowa City Welcoming Week
and invite the community to engage in opportunities during Iowa City Welcoming Week
and beyond to learn; connect across differences; take joint action to achieve a welcoming,
equitable, and inclusive community; and reaffirm their commitment to continue to
examine and adopt programs, policies, and practices that improve our efforts towards
achieving equity for all now and in the future.

I nternational Day of P eace proclamation
•
City of Iowa City Orve
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21st of
September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the
ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire; and
Whereas, in 2021,as we heal from the COVID-19 pandemic, we are inspired to think
creatively and collectively about how to help everyone recover, how to build resilience, and
how to transform our world into one that is more equal, more just, inclusive, sustainable, and
healthier; and
Whereas, the pandemic is known for hitting underprivileged and marginalized groups the
hardest. By April 2021, over 687 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered
globally, but over 100 countries have not received a single dose; and
Whereas, the pandemic has been accompanied by a surge in stigma, discrimination, and
hatred, which only cost more lives: the virus attacks all without caring where we are from or
what we believe. In confronting this common foe, we must be reminded that we are not each
other's enemy. To be able to recover from the devastation of the pandemic,we must make
peace with one another; and
Whereas, we must make peace with nature. Despite the travel restrictions and economic
shutdowns, climate change is not on pause. What we need is a green and sustainable global
economy that produces jobs, reduces emissions, and builds resilience to climate impacts; and
Whereas, the 2021 theme for the International Day of Peace is "Recovering better for an
equitable and sustainable world." We invite you to join the efforts of the UN family as we
focus on recovering better for a more equitable and peaceful world.
Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City do hereby proclaim September
21, 2021 to be
International Day of Peace
throughout the City of Iowa City and urge all government departments and agencies,
organizations, schools, places of worship and individuals in our city to commemorate, in
an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace.

Whereas, September 15th is significant as a starting date for Hispanic Heritage Month
because it is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa

about Hispanic heritage and to honor the many Hispanics who have contributed to the
progress of Iowa City, the state, and the nation.

September 15, 2021 —October 15, 2021 to be
