Presentation from local childcare coalition Mayor Teague introduced Jennifer Banta & Missie Forbes with the local Childcare Coalition. Jennifer Banta provided information on the Childcare Task Force, the state of childcare, and wage supplements. Missie Forbes provided information on a program called Starting Strong and the Earn & Learn project noting there would be an information session that week at Kirkwood regarding a childcare program which is expected to start this summer with graduation in August 2022. Banta asked Council to consider funding for a navigator position to reach out to the communities that need childcare and train them to become providers. Individual Council members expressed their views. Action: Staff will follow-up with the presenters from the local childcare coalition and further explore partnerships that were anticipated with the initial ARPA planning. Clarification of Agenda items None. Information Packet Discussion [May 5, May 12] May 5 1. (IP4: Memo from Historic Preservation Commission: Montgomery Butler House). Councilor Taylor asked for clarification as to what the next step is needed from Council. City Manager Fruin provided background of the property and noted Council would need to direct action if it is a top priority for them. 2. (IP3: Memo from Associate Planner: Analysis of Iowa City's Residential Development in 2021) Councilor Bergus encouraged councilors to review prior to the 5/18 Strategic Planning Work Session. ➢ May 12 1. (IP5: Iowa City Fire Department: 2021 Annual Report & IP7: Press Release: Iowa City Fire Department to celebrate 150th anniversary) Councilor Taylor thanked the Iowa City Fire Department for the annual report and provided recent firsthand experience with ICFD & First Responders. Taylor also noted the press release regarding the departments 150th anniversary. City Manager Fruin offered Council an opportunity to tour the stations. Council Work Session May 17, 2022 Page 2 2. (IP6: Letter from Northside Neighborhood: Draft Statement of Purpose) Councilor Thomas mentioned the letter and encouraged councilors to keep it in mind during the 5/18 Strategic Planning Work Session. University of Iowa Student Government (USG) Updates Elizabeth Miglin, USG Liaison and Keaton Zeimet, USG Alternate Liaison gave introductions and presented USG updates. Council updates on assigned boards, commissions, and committees Council members reported on various assigned boards, commissions, and committees. Adjourn 5:29 p.m.
