HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-04-08 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among persons ages 10-24: motor-vehicle crashes, unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide; and WHEREAS, approximately 9.7 million~current drinkers in the United States are between the ages of 12-20; and WHEREAS, alcohol is the most frequently used drag by high-school seniors; and WHEREAS, young people begin drinking, on average, at 13.1 years of age; and WHEREAS, young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21; and WHEREAS, alcohol abuse is linked to as many as two-third of all sexual assaults and date rapes of teens and college students and is a major factor in unprotected sex among youth, increasing their risk of contracting HIV or other transmitted diseases; and WHEREAS, the typical American young person will see 100,000 beer commercials before he or she tums 18 (that is more than for sneakers, guns and jeans); and WHEREAS, 13 percent of all youth, ages 12-17, had at least one serious problem related to drinking in the past year. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, nearly forty years after the passage of the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, women and people of color continue to suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and Whereas, according to statistics released on September 2001 by the U.S. Census Bureau, year-round, full-time working women earned only 76% of the earnings of year- round, full-time working men, indicating no change or progress since 1999; and Whereas, over a working lifetime, this wage disparity costs the average American woman and her family an estimated $250,000 in lost wages, impacting Social Security benefits and pensions; and Whereas, fair pay equity policies can be implemented simply and without undue costs or hardship in both the public and private sectors; and Whereas, fair pay strengthens the security of families today and eases future retirement costs, while enhancing the American economy; and Whereas, Tuesday, April 15 symbolizes the day on which the wages paid to American women catch up to the wages paid to men fi.om the previous year.
