S eptember 6, 2022 AT TAC HM E NT S : Description I nternational Day of P eace yS City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the United Nations General Assembly established September 21 as the International Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace; and Whereas, in 2001 voted unanimously to designate the day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire; and Whereas, peace is more than the absence of conflict and includes justice, equity, respect for human rights, and care for the earth; and Whereas, we seek peace abroad, peace at home, and peace within; and Whereas, the theme of the International Day of Peace 2022 is "End Racism. Build Peace" in recognition that peace requires building a society where all people can flourish; and Whereas, militarism and the global climate emergency are the two greatest threats to peace and the U.S. military budget for 2022 is $778 billion while the budget to address climate change is only $28 billion; and Whereas, many organizations and individuals in Johnson County are committed to the ideals of peace and ending racism; and Whereas, an event to mark the International Day of Peace will be held at Mercer Park in Iowa City on Tuesday, September 20 at 5:30 pm; Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2022, to be International Day of Peace M Signed in Iowa City, Iowa 141 0,j>>*14 c this 6th day of September 2022 �. S eptember 6, 2022 AT TAC HM E NT S : Description National S enior Center Month City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, older Americans are significant members of our society, investing their wisdom and experience to help enrich and better the lives of younger generations; and Whereas, the Iowa City Senior Center, has acted as a catalyst for mobilizing the creativity, energy, vitality, and commitment of the older residents of Iowa City and Johnson County; and Whereas,through a wide array of services, programs, and activities, the Iowa City Senior Center empowers older adults to contribute to their own health and wellbeing of their fellow citizens of all ages; and Whereas, Iowa City Senior Center and the City of Iowa City affirm the dignity, self- worth, and independence of older adults by facilitating their decisions and actions; tapping their experiences, skills, and knowledge; and enabling their continued contributions to the community. The Iowa City Senior Center provides opportunities for seniors to maintain and improve their wellness, continue to learn, share experiences while engaging in local volunteer roles, and stay connected with friends and community members; and Whereas, we acknowledge the importance and the numerous contributions of The Iowa City Senior Center, and call upon all residents to recognize the special contributions of the members, participants and the special efforts of the staff and volunteers who work every day to enhance the well-being of our diverse and growing older adult population of our community. S eptember 6, 2022 AT TAC HM E NT S : Description World Champion Ben Kueter Day c_ 1.City of Iowa City PROCLAMATIONrillird."..hereas, on August 16, 2022, Iowa City resident, Benjamin Kueter, won the 2022 or Freestyle Wrestling World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria at 97 kilograms; and Whereas, Kueter won all four matches in the tournament and pinned his opponent from Turkey in the Gold Medal match; and Whereas, Kueter outscored his opponents by a combined total of 45-17; and Whereas, the Iowa City City High School senior became the fourth City High student, and fifth Iowa high-schooler, to win the Junior World Wrestling Championship; and Whereas, Kueter is only the sixth American wrestler to make the Junior men's freestyle world finals the summer ahead of his senior year of high school; and Whereas, Kueter enters the 2022-23 wrestling season with a record of 72-0 and will attempt to become Iowa's 32°d four-time state wrestling champion; and Whereas, Kueter won the Gold Medal at the inaugural Dan Gable Donnybrook Wrestling Tournament in Coralville in December 2021; and Whereas,the University of Iowa recruit is a four-sport athlete who competes in football, wrestling, track, and baseball; and Whereas, the Mayor, City Council, and the citizens of the great City of Iowa City, are always proud of the academic and athletic achievements of their local students; and Now, Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim September 6, 2022 to be World Champion Ben Kueter Day in Iowa City. �--- May Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, "w/` this 6th day of September 2022.
