FILED October 3, 2022 OCT - 3 2022 City Council City Clerk 410 E.Washington Street Iowa City, Iowa Iowa City, IA 52240 PRESENTED AT 10/3/22 MEETING To the Members of the City Council of Iowa City: I am writing again to express my support for keeping the current design of City Park Pool. This is my third letter to City Council. I've spoken as several meetings. On September 7, 2022, I emailed four Council members and requested a meeting to discuss the City's plans for the future of City Park Pool. Not a single council member responded. Not one. At the last Council meeting, I presented petitions with over 900 names of members of this community who support keeping the current design,.footprint, and character of CPP. I also identified information in the Parks & Recreation Department's July 2013 Condition of the Pools report showing that it would cost$537,050 to make all the known repairs to City Park Pool identified by the engineering firm— far less than the cost to replace the pool. Of course,it might cost more. How much more?Who knows? The engineering firm's report shows that we don't know the full extent of what's wrong with the current pool. The first item of the report says: "Consult a structural engineer to evaluate and test the main pool concrete pool structure" and adds: "Knowing the condition of the existing concrete structure will allow making better recommendation for repairs/replacements." The engineering firm says that the"pool lost 30,000 gallons of water per day this past year" —and that it would cost$4,000 to $6,000 to "perform leak detection testing to locate the source of the leaks in the main pool structure and verify that leaks are not in the piping." Why hasn't this been done? You are responsible for making important decisions with taxpayer dollars—and you don't have all the information you need to make an informed decision. It is simply not responsible to move forward with Parks &Rec's recommendation to replace a pool that this community loves without knowing what it would cost to REPAIR the pool. Sincerely, /,....7 .
