Fiscal Impact: None.
Recommendations: Staff: Approval
Commission: N/A
Attachments: Council correspondence - Nicholas Maddix
Executive Summary:
As directed by Title 9, Chapter 1, Section 3B of the City Code, this is to advise the City Council of
the following action:
Pursuant to Section 9-1-3A (13); Install "No Parking Between Signs" along the curve on the south
side of Sterling Drive near Dover Street.
Background /Analysis:
This action to prohibit parking along the curve on Sterling Drive is being taken to improve visibility
for vehicles entering from Dover Street. Over the past several years, Staff have received
numerous complaints from residents about visibility at this location. Staff have reviewed the
parking situation and support the removal of parking in this area so that drivers can better see
approaching vehicles.
Sterling Drive is a 28 -foot -wide street and parking is already prohibited along the north side of the
street. This parking prohibition is limited to an 85 -foot section along the curve near the intersection
with Dover Street - effectively removing (4) parking spaces.

Apologies for a second email, but I needed to clarify that I'd propose for parking to be moved from the south side to the
north side. I had these mixed up in my previous email. Basically the opposite side of where it is now.
Thanks!

Dear Iowa City City Council,
My name is Nicholas Maddix and I live at 2812 Sterling Drive with my folks, Barbara
and Robert Maddix. We received notification from the City today that there have
been increasingly more complaints on Sterling Drive, primarily from the intersection
with Dover St to around 2819 Sterling Dr. I can echo these concerns as I have seen
increasing congestion along the street, and while I can see the reason why the city
may wish to not permit parking on the north side of the street on this section, it
effects over 4 houses and about 10 neighbors. The main problem tends to be that
the folks at 2806 Sterling have about 3 cars. Combine this with the fact that our
house has 2 cars (one which I sold last week but have plans to get a new one next
year), and the other neighbor has 2 or 3 cars and well you can see the issue. More
younger people are moving into our neighborhood and they are bringing more
cars.I'm actually surprised the concerns have only come up recently because we've
had to deal with it ever since the city removed south side parking over 15 years ago
(back then parking was allowed on both sides, however)

Executive Summary:
As directed by Title 9, Chapter 1, Section 3B of the City Code, this is to advise the City Council of

Pursuant to Section 9-4-1A (19); Install NO STOPPING, STANDING, PARKING, 7:00 AM -
5:00 PM, MONDAY - FRIDAY signs on both sides of the marked school crosswalk on Wild
Prairie Drive, approximately 40 feet in advance of the crossing.
Background /Analysis:
This action is being taken to improve visibility of the school crosswalk on Wild Prairie Drive. The
change will prohibit drivers from loading and unloading children at or within the crosswalk. Vehicles
are currently stopping, standing, and parking too close to the crosswalk blocking views of the
children.
