A RESOLUTION
To recognize and support the various climate and sustainability related action items the City of
Iowa City is actively working on to implement.
Section 1. Short Title
This resolution may be cited as "Support of Iowa City Climate and Sustainability Action"
Section 2. Background and Discussion
Whereas, Iowa City holds the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 45% from 2010 levels by
2030 and reaching net zero carbon status by 2050, both goals in accordance with the IPCC
(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).
Whereas, the 2022-2023 Undergraduate Student Government Platform emphasizes the need to
"[p]artner with the University, Office of Sustainability and the Environment, the City of Iowa
City, and sustainability -based student organization to promote sustainability awareness" and to
"make continual strides to reach the 2030 sustainability goals including efforts to decarbonize
the University."
Whereas, these goals of Undergraduate Student Government align with priorities of the City of
Iowa, so collaboration would be efficient, effective, and consistent for the greater Iowa City area.
Section 3. Action
Resolved, Undergraduate Student Government supports Iowa City in their climate endeavors.
Resolved, Undergraduate Student Government, more specifically, the Sustainability Committee
is willing to aid and advise Iowa City on sustainability actions and measures.
Therefore be it resolved, the members of Undergraduate Student Government shall provide input
and support to the City of Iowa City however most suitable to further their climate agenda as
well as the University's climate goals.
Section 4. Enactment Clause
Be it enacted by the Undergraduate Student Government upon the signature of the USG
President.
