HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecycling Update.pptRecycling Processi*ng Contract and Muiti,Lfamiely Housi*ng 0 Recycling Update August 17, 2009 Summary and Next Steps (from November 2008 presentation) m Single stream recycling may preserve landfill space save Refuse Department in disposal fees allow for expansion to multi -family cost more to transport and process materials m Staff recommended RFP moving to single stream system 4MI� %1,40 Update Put out RFP with options for current system and single stream in order to compare costs m Had one response City Carton Company, Inc. 4WW Based on RFP response Single stream processing would cost an additional $1 per month per customer (roughly $100,000 annually) Transportation to facility in Cedar Rapids Processing fees to sort streams Single stream is not financially feasible at this time based on simply changing processing structure Considerations • Initially looked at just changing processing structure • Considers immediate cost of new service but not potential long-term savings Equipment changeover would take 6 years Labor force impacts m Would need fewer staff for curbside recycling (met by attrition'. new programs needs, duty reassignment, etc.) Fuel: shorter route times may -reduce fuel usage Next steps m To make single steam financially feasible, processing and equipment changes have to be implemented simultaneously m Evaluate recycling programs to determine best approach to implement changes simultaneously M Sign contract (by resolution at September 15 council meeting) with City Carton Company, Inc. for 3 -year contract using current sorted curbside system Contract has option to move to single stream
