Update
Put
out RFP with
options
for current
system
and
single stream
in order
to compare
costs
m Had one response
City Carton Company, Inc.
4WW
Based on RFP response
Single stream processing would cost an
additional $1 per month per customer (roughly
$100,000 annually)
Transportation to facility in Cedar Rapids
Processing fees to sort streams
Single stream is not financially feasible at this
time based on simply changing processing
structure
Considerations
• Initially looked at just changing processing
structure
• Considers immediate cost of new service but not
potential long-term savings
Equipment changeover would take 6 years
Labor force impacts
m Would need fewer staff for curbside recycling (met by
attrition'. new programs needs, duty reassignment, etc.)
Fuel: shorter route times may -reduce fuel usage
Next steps
m To make single steam financially feasible, processing
and equipment changes have to be implemented
simultaneously
m Evaluate recycling programs to determine best
approach to implement changes simultaneously
M Sign contract (by resolution at September 15 council
meeting) with City Carton Company, Inc. for 3 -year
contract using current sorted curbside system
Contract has option to move to single stream
