WHAT IS COMMUNITY VIOLENCE
INTERVENTION (CVI) ?
Community Violence Intervention (CVI) is an approach that uses EVIDENCE-
INFORMED strategies to reduce violence through COMMUNITY-
CENTERED initiatives. The most effective initiatives
-IDENTIFY AND ENGAGE THOSE MOST AT RISK.
•STABILIZE THOSE PEOPLE WITH IMMEDIATE SAFETY AND SECURITY.
-TREAT UNHEALTHY THINKING, UNSAFE BEHAVIOR AND UNADDRESSED TRAUMA.
-OFFER EDUCATIONAL AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES.

WHO IS INVOLVED IN THE WORK OF CVI ?
Partnership of Community Partners, Law Enforcement, Credible Messengers (an individual with lived
experiences with deep ties to the community they serve) . The 'credibility' allows them to build
relationships with community residents and stakeholders and intervene with individuals who are at risk of
being involved in violence in a way that outsiders often cannot.

1CVI programs serve as a vital way to connect community resources to the
people who need them most, addressing root causes of gun violence in a

partners alone.

WHO IS THE FOCUS OF COMMUNITY
VIOLENCE INTERVENTION (CVI)?
CVI programs focus on partnerships with those most affected by gun violence.
The collaborations between government and community stakeholders give CVI programs
credibility, making people feel safer and more likely to engage in combating the spread of gun
violence.
CVI programs focus on reaching the small number of people who are most connected to local
cycles of violence and have proved to reduce homicides by as much as 60% where they are
implemented. (Center forAmerican Progress, 2023)
