Gratitude Johnson County Food Policy Council’s August Happy Hour took place at the South District Market patio with the owners of Royceann Soule Food, Cachua Cakes, Early Bird Cafe and Artesanias Mar and More as panel guests. Founded in the spring of 2022, So.6 is a 501(c)6 nonprofit created by the efforts of the South District businesses, property owners and the neighborhood coming together to image a thriving business district that enhances the quality of life for all who live, work and play on the south side of Iowa City. So.6 is a Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID), which is a tool for property owners and businesses in a geographic area to fund improvements and services to spur economic development & growth, enhance livability & infrastructure, provide advocacy marketing and create events. This is made possible by the SSMID commercial and multi- residential properties paying into a self-imposed levy which creates the private investment to leverage and use to make improvements within the geographic location--Keokuk and Broadway Street, south of highway 6 to Cross Park Ave. in the South District of Iowa City.
