CITY OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT February 20, 2024 International Women's Day and Women's History Month Attachments: International Womens Day - Womens History Month proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, International Women's Day is observed around the world on March 8 to celebrate the achievements of women and Women's History Month in March recognizes the contributions of women in the United States; and Whereas, the theme for International Women's Day 2024 is "Invest in Women — Accelerate Progress;" and the theme for Women's History Month is "Inspire Inclusion;" and Whereas, in 2024 International Women's Day and Women's History Month come at the mid -point of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which set targets for gender equity and inclusion as well as the eradication of poverty and hunger, good health, education for all, climate action and other priorities by 2030; and Whereas, Sustainable Development Goal #3, Good Health and Well-being aims to reduce by one third premature mortality from non -communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and to promote mental health and well-being; and Whereas, women leaders and women -led organizations are working in our community and around the world to promote good health and well-being; and Whereas, when women make up a critical mass of between 25 and 35 per cent of the people in community forestry, their impact is felt. Forest conditions and regeneration improve, and the women themselves gain greater political voice; and Whereas, the International Women's Day will be celebrated locally at Night of 1000 Dinners, Thursday, March 7, and will honor five women -led organizations that are advancing Good Health and Well -Being: 4Cs of Johnson County, The Global Kids School -Based Clinics, the Emma Goldman Clinic, the Youth Crisis Stabilization Program, and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim March 8 as International Women's Day and the month of March 2024 to be recognized as Women's History Month .y and urge residents to commemorate and celebrate the achievements of -hanging the world. _ Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 20th day of February 2024. CITY OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT February 20, 2024 Rare Disease Day Attachments: Rare Disease Day proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, there are approximately 7,000 rare diseases and conditions (each affecting fewer than 200,000 Americans) in the United States, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH); while each of these diseases may affect small numbers of people, rare diseases as a group affect an estimated 25-30 million American lives; and Whereas, national statistics indicate that approximately 1 in 10 people in Iowa or about 300,000 Iowans are living with a rare disease; and Whereas, many rare diseases are serious and debilitating conditions that have significant impact on the lives of those affected and cystinosis is one of those 7,000 diseases. Cystinosis affects between 2,000 and 3,000 people around the globe as it damages cells, causing them to crystallize and die; and Whereas, while more than 620 drugs and biologics have been approved for treatment of over 1,000 rare diseases according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over 90% of rare diseases do not have an FDA approved treatment; and Whereas, individuals and families affected by rare disease often experience problems such as delays in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, difficulty fording a health care provider with expertise in their condition, and a lack of access to treatments or ancillary services; and Whereas, it is imperative that Congress pass, the STAT (Speeding Therapy Access Today) Act, a bipartisan bill that was created with the input of the rare disease community aimed at improving the development of and access to therapies for the rare disease community; and Whereas, the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and Iowa based Next Generation of Cystinosis (NGC) are organizing a nationwide observance of Rare Disease Day 2024.
