Job Summary
Assists with organizing, directing and supervising the operational, financial and personnel
activities involved in the provision of recreation programs, events, services and facilities.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Plans, assigns and reviews the work of staff in the provision of recreation programs,
recreation customer service operations, events, services and facilities.
• Assists in the development of budget requests and division goals, and monitors budget
expenditures, coordinates processing of invoices.
• Monitors equipment conditions and coordinates repair activities.
• Assists in estimating and coordinating labor, equipment and materials for the recreation
programs, aquatics and Recreation Center operations.
• Assists in issuing the required press releases for the Recreation division.
• Provides coordination for the activity guide.
• Coordinates facility programming, rentals, and use.
• Assists with overseeing inter-division/department coordination.
• Listens and responds to complaints, suggestions and ideas from the general public
regarding division activities.
• Monitors completion of job assignments to ensure compliance with standards and
instructions and revises instructions and time frames as necessary.
• Performs reviews division safety checklist for each member and completes incident
reports for on-the-job incidents/injuries.
• Participates in planning of new recreation facilities, including plans related to design
layout and equipment.
• Assists with oversight and scheduling of various contracts and contracted work within
the division and serves as department liaison to assigned construction projects.
• Serves as acting Recreation Superintendent when assigned.
• Compiles and monitors on-going safety related agenda and issues for monthly meetings
as well as required certifications and compliance to OSHA regulations.

• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Degree in Recreation Management or related. Experience in
recreation programming.
• Valid State of Iowa driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of
age. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related
experience; or six years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to make analytical decisions based on department policy statements.
• Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals, technical
procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Knowledge of park and community resources and the administration of principles,
techniques, and methods of providing recreation programs.
• Skill in planning, implementation, and technical knowledge of recreation program and
facility management and maintaining positive public relations.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to
permanent staff in completing daily tasks and assignments. May perform additional supervisory

duties at the direction of the Department or Division Head to include disciplinary action,
assisting with hiring or firing, and writing or delivering performance reviews.

occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required
by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception
and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving
mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic
chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibration, confined space, and traffic hazards. The employee
is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen,
insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
some exposure to stress due to the work environment and/or crisis situations.
