HomeMy WebLinkAboutCashier - RevenueUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Cashier - Revenue Department: Finance Division: Revenue Supervisor: Revenue & Risk Manager FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 3 Job Number: 0301 Job Summary Under immediate direction, receives payments for City services and enters transactions into computer. Provides receipts, information and directions to the general public. Directs customers to appropriate City personnel and departments. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Greets customers and receives payments for a wide range of City services; provides customers with receipts and change, when applicable, answers customer questions. • Enters payment transactions into computer for a wide range of payments including utilities, parking fines, finance receipts, landfill and accounts receivable. • Enters sales information for bus passes, yard waste bags and refuse stickers. • Provides general information to public and directs public to appropriate departments. • Assists in reconciliation of cash register receipts on a daily basis. • Distributes parking review forms. • Explains City parking policies to individuals with towed vehicles. • Files documents and information electronically and manually. • Maintains supplies and orders supplies. • Processes payments for other City departments. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs all other related duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in cashiering and/or customer service. Bilingual skill ability. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, and other employees of the organization. • Ability to operate standard office equipment including computer terminal, spreadsheet applications, calculator, printers and copier. • Ability to read and understand written materials to record work activities or keep records. • Ability to reconcile payments and handle money. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to write simple correspondence. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). • Knowledge of general bookkeeping applications and general office procedures. • Skills in cashiering, customer service, dealing with sensitive information, and dealing with upset customers. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
