HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommunications AideUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Communications Aide Department: City Manager’s Office Division: Communications Supervisor: Communications Coordinator FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 2 Job Number: 0204 Job Summary Under direct supervision, greets the public, directs phone calls, responds to questions, offers appropriate assistance, assists with internal communications and outreach to City staff, and performs other clerical duties as assigned. Assists Communications Coordinator in management of customer service tracking software and creates and manages content for the City’s employee website, www.iowacity.online. Creates web content for area events and related road closures on www.icgov.org. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Greets the public and provides routine information and assistance. • Answers the phone; takes and delivers messages. • Provides editing and content management for the City employee website www.iowacity.online. • Creates web content for area events and related road closure announcements for public awareness at www.icgov.org. • Manages customer service through the City’s online reporting system. • Schedules meetings for City staff in City Hall. • Assists Communications Coordinator in internal messaging to City staff. • Helps track and maintain inventories of operational supplies. • Connects community members including unhoused, refugees, and students to available community resources. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Provides translation services, if applicable. • Performs all other related duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. or pursuit of degree and one to three months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in professional writing. Bilingual speaking ability. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to write and edit documents, routine reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of basic office equipment, filing and sorting techniques. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
