HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommunity Service Officer - EvidenceUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Community Service Officer - Evidence Department: Police Division: Support Services Supervisor: Police Lieutenant - Professional Standards FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 7 Job Number: 0704 Job Summary Under general direction, assists the public and department personnel with handling evidence/seized property, inventorying evidence/seized property, and providing quality control and disposal of evidence/seized property. Also handles all lost and found property for the City. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Testifies in court as required. • Inventories and weighs evidence/seized property, repairs and submits evidence to the crime lab, marks evidence/seized property for storage, handles large amounts of cash, transports drugs and evidence to labs. • Enters evidence information into computer system, classifies information, and manages system. • Responds to inquiries from defendants, attorneys, victims, and officers as to the status and availability of evidence. • Tracks all court cases involving evidence in care of City. • Works on pretrial preparation. • Handles lost and found property. • Disposes of evidence, seized property, and found property. • Prepares video and still photographs of evidence. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator certification within one year of hire. National Crime Information Center Certification within six months of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in law enforcement or emergency dispatch. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to acquire an adequate working knowledge of the emergency communications dispatch system. • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. • Ability to handle, accurately count and deposit large sums of currency. • Ability to handle, package and transport fragile, expensive and irreplaceable evidence/seized property so as to maintain the integrity, value and chain of custody of these items. • Ability to operate police radio and police vehicles. • Ability to operate emergency communication equipment in dispatch center. • Ability to organize evidence/seized property using current storage procedures, protocols and computer programs. • Ability to read and understand written materials, maps, and street signs in order to record work activities, keep records, or work with a computer. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. • Knowledge of City street locations, parking and traffic regulations. • Knowledge of department evidence/seized property protocols. • Knowledge of department’s records management system. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). • Skill in using tools and equipment used in minor auto modifications. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
