HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectrician - Traffic EngineeringUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Electrician – Traffic Engineering Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traffic Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traffic Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 11 Job Number: 1102 Job Summary Under general direction, installs, repairs and maintains electronic traffic controllers, vehicle and pedestrian detection equipment, video monitoring equipment, computer systems and other hardware used in traffic control. Installs and maintains streetlights and collects traffic count data as needed. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance; maintains and repairs traffic control hardware, devices and wiring. • Performs operational checks on traffic control and street lighting systems; uses technical equipment applications and software applications specific to equipment. • Observes functions of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement. • Maintains and repairs street lighting hardware and wiring. • Installs new and repairs existing traffic and pedestrian signal heads and modules, poles, conduit, wiring, cameras, power supplies, and traffic signal controllers. • Operates and makes changes to computer/traffic related software/firmware. • Updates Cartegraph and ArcGis asset management system. • Maintains accurate records of work performed including maintenance, chargebacks, accidents and purchases. • Operates computer to perform various tasks including traffic control, recordkeeping and email. • Assists with other divisional electrical needs. • Performs emergency sign repair. • Performs general housekeeping, shop and vehicle maintenance. • Performs utility locations for Traffic Engineering infrastructure. • Ensures that electrical work on behalf of the City is done in compliance with local, state and national codes. • Answers public questions. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Orders supplies and stocks items to maintain inventory, orders replacement items. • Reviews proposed plans for traffic and street lighting. • Performs banner change outs and installation. • Performs on-call duties, as assigned; responds to emergency calls for repairs of traffic signals and streetlights. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree as Electrician. Experience in electrical work. • Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • State of Iowa Certified Journeyman Electrician License. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentage. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, measure and calculate electrical formulas. • Ability to prepare written records, routine reports, and time sheets. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schematics, technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Knowledge of City and National codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. • Knowledge of the theory, practice and equipment used in electrical trade.
