HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectrician - WastewaterUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Electrician – Wastewater Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 11 Job Number: 1112 Job Summary Under general direction, maintains and repairs electronic and industrial electrical control systems and electrical distribution systems in the Wastewater division. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Maintains and repairs motor control centers and electrical distribution systems at the City’s wastewater treatment plant and lift stations. • Performs operational checks on electric motor control panels and instrumentation equipment. • Assists in the installation and programming of logic controllers and variable frequency drivers. • Operates and repairs electronic and electrical test equipment used for diagnostic and trouble shooting. • Calibrates gas detectors, flow meters and other electronic sensors. • Assists in design and installation of new electrical and electronic systems. • Assists in integrating new equipment with existing controls. • Assists in re-design and installation of improvements to existing controls. • Assists in research and coordinates repairs and changes with plant staff, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. • Assists in the design and implementation of preventive maintenance programs for electrical and electronic equipment. • Conducts monthly testing of generators, ensures upkeep and maintenance. • Assists in updating PLC and VFD programming to meet changing operational needs. • Maintains accurate records of work performed including electrical one-line drawings of new and existing electrical systems. • Maintains parts and materials documentation and inventory. • Assists with other divisional electrical or electronic instrumentation needs. • Performs general housekeeping, shop and vehicle maintenance. • Performs electrical work in compliance with local, state and national codes. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Maintains inventory and requisitions replacement items. • Performs on-call duties, as assigned. • Responds to wastewater plant and lift station equipment emergency calls. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree as an Electrician. Experience in electrical work. • State of Iowa Certified Journeyman Electrician License required. Forklift certification required within two years of appointment. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. • State of Iowa Master Electrical License. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentage. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, measure, and calculate electrical formulas. • Ability to prepare written records, routine reports, and documentation. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schematics, technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Knowledge of City and National electrical codes and the rules and standards pertaining to industrial electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. • Knowledge of the theory, practice, and equipment used in electrical trade. • Skill in the use of a platform lift truck, a utility truck, and various hand and power tools.
