HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectronics Technician - WastewaterUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Electronics Technician – Wastewater Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 13 Job Number: 1313 Job Summary Under general direction, maintains, repairs, designs, installs and programs electronic and electrical control systems and electrical distribution systems in Wastewater Treatment division. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Maintains control and supply systems at the City's wastewater treatment facilities; troubleshoots and analyzes hardware and software failures of wastewater treatment control and distribution systems. • Operates and repairs electronic/electrical test equipment, PLC programming, VFD programming and electrical hand tools. • Calibrates gas detectors, flow meters and other electronic sensors. • Adapts, designs, and installs new systems; integrates new equipment with existing controls; redesigns and installs improvements to existing controls. • Researches and coordinates repairs and changes with staff, equipment manufacturers and suppliers. • Designs and implements preventive maintenance of equipment; updates programming to adapt or expand to changing needs. • Functions as lead worker on specific projects related to electrical work; assigns specific tasks, checks work for completeness and safety; trains staff in specific electrical tasks and in general concepts and theory of electricity. • Coordinates electrical work including new circuits and new replacement equipment and wiring with process operators and mechanical maintenance work teams. • Provides technical services in design and consultation within and outside department and division. • Participates in safety committee work, trains others in safe electrical operations. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree as an Electrician. Experience as a process control electrician or electronic technician. • State of Iowa Certified Journeyman Electrician License. Forklift certification required within two years of appointment. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in instrumentation and programming. • State of Iowa Master Electrical License. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to calculate electrical and electronic wire size, amp loading, volt drop and other properties. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to prepare written job records, routine reports, and draw and adapt wiring diagrams. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schematics, technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. • Ability to troubleshoot using elementary schematic and ladder diagrams and adapt and design. • Ability to work in tight spaces on equipment in fixed spaces. • Knowledge and skill in control circuity (120VAC and 24 VDC), and motor circuits (480VAC three phase). • Knowledge of City and National codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. • Knowledge of PLC system programming language, motor control logic, electronic control sensors and control circuits for SCADA system operation and programming. • Knowledge of process control methods. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Knowledge of the theory, practice and equipment used in electrical trade. • Skill in operating hand and power tools specific to trade. • Skill in operating heavy equipment including platform lift truck, utility van, bobcat, concrete saw, backhoes and boom truck. Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
