HomeMy WebLinkAboutElectronics TechnicianUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Electronics Technician Department: Transportation Services Division: Parking Supervisor: Operations Supervisor FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 11 Job Number: 1107 Job Summary Under general direction, installs repairs and maintains electronic access control equipment within parking ramps, electronic parking meters, transit fare box equipment, parking and transit facility electrical equipment and building operational equipment, performs preventative maintenance and records preventative maintenance work performed in computer system. Assists with various projects related to parking ramp restoration, collection of parking revenue, snow removal and painting projects. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Conducts routine preventive maintenance on parking access and revenue control equipment. • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic issues with access and revenue control equipment, electronic parking meters, fare revenue collection equipment and operational equipment within facilities. • Operates trucks, skid loaders, end loaders, snowplows, paint sprayers, power washers and sweepers in performance of work assignments. • Uses various hand tools and equipment typical in the electrical trade. • Performs snow plowing and removal from downtown metered parking stalls, parking lots and parking ramps, and other public areas. • Repairs and installs facility lighting - fixtures, ballast and underground electrical wiring. • Performs maintenance and repairs of work related to parking ramp facility, transit shelters, and parking maintenance. • Installs access control devices including bases, conduit and wire. • Collects parking revenue from parking meters on street and within parking ramps. • Reviews plans for electrical improvements. • Orders access control parts and maintains inventory. • Responds to calls for service regarding access and revenue control equipment, electronic parking meters, fare revenue collection equipment and building operational equipment. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree as an Electrician. Experience in electrical work. • State of Iowa Certified Journeyman Electrician License. Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and solve electronic equations, ability to calculate electrical and electronic wire size, amp loading, volt drop and other properties. • Ability to prepare written job records, routine reports, and draw and adapt wiring diagrams. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maps, schematics, technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. • Ability to use various microcomputer software, and interface with access control and transit control equipment. • Ability to work in tight spaces on equipment in fixed spaces. • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. • Knowledge of City and National codes and the rules and standards pertaining to the electrical construction and the maintenance of electrical equipment. • Knowledge of digital and microprocessor-based units. • Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory. • Skill in operating heavy equipment including platform lift truck, van, bobcat, concrete saw and end loaders. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Skill in use of test equipment and troubleshooting electrical and electronic malfunctions. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
